Apart from the cladding panels and bucket, I thought some of the mechanical and beam elements looked suspiciously 'specific', but then again maybe there are just hundreds of different standard technic elements these days?

The problem I'd have now is knowing which parts are supposed to do what. The dog-clutches/selectors for example seem to be made of five specific parts which can only be used to make a dog clutch.

BTW, wonder what's wrong with making the bucket out of standard parts? Wouldn't look totally wrong.

Looking through the last few sets I have bought and some older gear - there are definately a lot less 'studded and holed' bricks. But a lot of the connectors, gears, wheels etc seem similar if maybe a lot newer.

Is it not just us old boys remembering the good times, and with a bit more imagination all these 'specific' bricks can be made into other models?

You only have to look at some of the super car creations - diablo, enzo, viper that are on the eurobricks site to see what they are being used for.

Also I think a lot of people are rc-ing their models and making all the functions work.

My campervan came today - looks ace, but the wife has taken it for my christmas present frown

Yeah I think it's partly fear of the unknown - the parts are just different, and there are many more different ones. Obviously you can build the tracked loader with the excavator set, so why not something like a tank as well?

you probably could but Town and Technic have never featured overtly military models as official product ...

the excavator has got everything you need to build an AFV - i.e. tracks , 'powerpack' and a turntable ( turret ring) you could do pneumatics to elevate / depress the gun etc ( given you can do hiabs and digger buckets with it.

A much younger version of me once set in pictures to the lego club magazine of a tank I had built hoping to get it featured in the readers builds.

I got a very nice letter back saying they did not want to build military vehichles but they sent me a nice free soldier keyring

I wasn't meaning as an official set, just that you could probably build a tank from the excavator parts. As an exercise it would be nice to power the tracks from one motor within the main chassis (or a geared pair if that's what it took) and steer via differential clutches rather than one motor per track. And yes the slew ring and drive could be lifted as-is.

ETA, you could use the linear actuators to raise or lower the gun, the pneumatics I always found a bit hit and miss.

The guy who invented Lego was a pacifist, so no surprise there isn't much (in any?) military stuff.

Lego policy has always been no military products. It took them quite some time to release colours that could be used to create camoflage.

I got a few of these big techno sets a few years back.
I built them, and they looked Ok but not very realistic, and not very usable.
I built a few bits out of the kits, then decided I was bored of them and flogged the lot.

These days I prefer real models of stuff - like models of trains, planes, cars, houses etc, scratch built or from kits and/or components. Just gives me more range, I add radio then I have working trains, boats, planes and cars that look realistic.

Where lego 'could' clean up is in house components - it would be great to be able to model roofs, rooms and houses etc well, and it wouldn't need all these odd looking 'one-model-use' bits either.

I build scale models and r/c flying models too. Tecnic lego is great if you want something nice to play with and that you don't have to paint or fiddle with.

I though the whole point of lego was to fiddle? wink

Pre-made stuff from Hobbyking, R2Hobbies etc makes lots of nice stuff attainable off the shelf.
I think I preferred lego when it was more generic, lego bricks are fantastic for building houses (obviously) and you can experiment, remake, extend, modify etc. With fixed vehicles I find it difficult to imagine building much else - although I did build a nice tractor from some V8 car kit I had, but it didn't use even half of the parts.

My favourite these days is helicopters (T450, T500 etc) and you can get nice scale fuses for them, I guess I just like stuff to work these days - couldn't imagine a lego one wink

In the same boat - also have a lot of rc cars, planes, boats that are either bought RTR or in kit. Also do a little bit of proper kit modelling.

Lego is a nice simple clean 'toy', and thats all it ever will be to me!

I meant that with things I build myself from scratch, or with scale models that I add detail to, there is an amazing amount of fiddling about to get things to fit or to get things looking right. With Lego, all the bits are at least guaranteed to fit together, and don't need finishing with paint or whatever.

Currently I'm building a 1:24 car model which is very tricky, and sometimes not particularly relaxing. I'm also building the Lego excavator which, while probably not as satisfying in the end, is quite a pleasant way to spend an hour or so and I know that at the end I'll have something that's fun to mess about with.

the excavator was a lot of fun to build so I decided to get a few of the older ones out of the cupboard, first up, the power puller dragster!

I had forgotten about the tractor puller! Definately going to have to start sifting through my box of bits and downloading all the lost manuals.

Guys - i'm on the scrounge if anyone can assist please.

Bought the Technic Tractor/Tipper (8063) for my 6 year old son (at least thats what i told swmbo) & having got the thing built in less than 4 hours i find that it has got one piece missing which suprised me somewhat as i have never bought a Lego set with any missing pieces before.

I am after one of part number 410785 to enable me to complete the rear wheel surround.

Does anyne out their have one that i could quire as i have been through my son' ples of Lego & i cannot find a piece similar.

Please PM me if you can help.

Apart that it's a great kit - my first Technic build for quite a while so i have just ordered the camper van & i'm off pick up the Supercar which i bought on line last night.

I'm also after the Ferrari F1 car as well however having been on fleabay this morning & seeing one of them being advertised for £349.00!!!! (albeit brand new & unopened) i'm not so sure now.

There are cheaper ones as well although they have already been built which, i think, defeats the object of them.

Thank you.

Ordered from there and it came pretty much the next day.

Well I'm now the proud owner of three Unimogs thanks to the Argos 3-for-2 promotion (adding to a worrying amount of technical Lego in this house - visitors must wonder where all our kids are...)

Anyway, happy to share the saving (well mostly), by off-loading the spare two at a very reasonable price. Message me if interested - otherwise will punt them on eBay in a few weeks and make a mint wink

Likewise - although I'll be keeping the Unimog and Excavator for myself for Christmas laugh

I have one Unimog spare all still sealed if any PHer local to Newbury area fancies one - paid £290 in total so happy to sell for a third of that if you can come and collect (this thing is huge!) before sticking it on ebay.
