Check out The Army Painter if you want some cheaper alternatives.

They also sell this stuff:
https://shop.thearmypainter.com/products.php?Produ...

Which is rebranded wood varnish (ie cheaper still from B&Q).

For those dabbling with the Conquest magazine, you might want to consider subscribing online for a month and then cancelling.

If you do, you'll get a free copy of the magazine, some glue, cutters and a mould line remover and the 5th issue of the magazine is an exclusive edition Ultramarines Primaris character.

Here's what's in the first issues:

Issue 1 (£1.99) - 3 easy build primaris marines, starter brush, 3 paints (Macragge Blue, Abbadon Black, Gold)
Issue 2 (£4.99) - 3 easy build Death Guard Plague Marines, 1 paint (death guard green), 5 dice, 1 paper playing mat, 2 paper rulers
Issue 3 (£7.99) - 3 easy build space marine reavers, 1 paint (lead belcher)
Issue 4 (£7.99) - 5 easy build pox walkers, 1 paint (Bugman's glow)
Issue 5 (£7.99) - 1 exclusive Ultramarines Primaris character

The cancellation policy is (probably deliberately) a bit unclear, but per the site you can cancel at any time, but cancellations can take up to 28 days to process. So, If you want to stop at issue 5, you'll need to subscribe and then cancel before your first order is delivered.

An interesting product, although I have to say I think the younger audience will be put off pretty quickly. At least one of my 3 chaps didn't exactly want to go together particularly well, and there is more moulding flash than I expected from GW. Is it common for parts to be attached to the sprue in such obvious places? e.g. right on top of the curved shoulder pauldrons. Anyway, I gave them a quick airbrush undercoat with Tamiya flat mid grey . At £8 a week I won't be getting the other parts, and I'm certainly not going to spend £30 on some small pots of paint for 3 chaps, so I'll probably mix my own paint from my artists acrylics.

Different scale I know, but be prepared to be blown away by this scratch-built model:

I'm so, so gutted I never bought the shares I could have done at IPO. I was 16 years old working at GW on Saturdays and Thursday evenings, the company got floated, I was offered up to £2k worth of shares. Of course I didn't have 2k spare at that age and so I tried to get my folks to lend me the money and they refused because it might encourage me to gamble. Even they had to admit they were wrong when the shares practically quintupled in value within the first few months.

An absolutely valid approach - just remember to get them nice and thin to retain detail and smoothness.

Foolishly showed my sons my old stuff after my Dad dumped the contents of his loft at my house when he went to live in sunny Spain. Next thing I know they've picked out all the unfinished ones and had a go (8,9 and 10 years old) and all asking for new sets! Win!

One Dark Imperium set later and they've got me hooked again - I've bagged the Death Guard and left them the Marines to paint up as Black Templars.

25 years after I last painted one and these are my efforts so far - eyesight is definitely going though! Some work still to do on them. Drone is finished though. Not as good as others but really enjoyed it...

Bought the big ArmyPainter set from Amazon for £80. Bargain compared to Citadel and there are a couple of comparison charts about for matching.

Thinking about getting into 40k after a long hiatus from gaming.

What do I need to get going with Eldar (are they now called Aeldari? Why?). What's the story with rule books, codex etc

Army painter are good - I personally really like the vallejo air paints (for both airbrush and brush painting). Decent price, and dripper bottles make life so much nicer.

Olivera:

8th edition rulebook and aeldari (nice, trademark-able name...) codex and you're ready to start getting models.

Personally, I'd strongly recommend starting out with Kill Team (every GW and most independants start a campaign at the end of the month) - tiny armies, troops you'll be using in big 40k games too, and a really nicely developed game mechanic.

One big advantage with eldar (compared to something like death guard) is that they've pretty much been around forever, so there's always loads decently priced on ebay...

I second the eyesight thing, I now can’t focus on anything under 10 inches from my face!!! I’m getting old! Dont have to wear glasses much but for these, I have no choice frown

Popped into Gw on Friday, and the average age in there had to be in the high 20’s if it was a day, although some of the prices on the boxes made my eyes water! I did pick up a Darl elf lord dragon, so I can really play now. If I can get the idea out of my head and into reality then I’ll be happy.

On the subject of kill team, Gw model channels have popped up in my YouTube feed after a bit of searching paint schemes and tips. Table minions was one and he was talking 100 point teams for less than $50. Then it dawned on me, if you get issues 1 and 3 of conquest, then you have a cheap starter kill team (£10 exc paint).

It seemed an ideal subject to experiment with painting techniques on. Play around with isopropyl and flow improver. If it all goes wrong, I've only lost £1:99. I certainly wouldn't want to be testing it out on the £££ full price kits.

I haven't tried Army Painter stuff myself, but their stuff seems to get very good reviews, not least for their brush set. I had saved up for some paints etc and then my GPU went phut...

This is the video you were referring to https://youtu.be/AgXd4NjJOis

I regularly listen to his videos whilst painting, I find it relaxing, amusing and informative.

Worthwhile signing up to the GameFor app that he developed as it details players, clubs, shops etc. I get my stuff from Dark Sphere as it near where I work and there is a small independent down the road both offer GW stuff 20% off,

If any PHer is looking from some Citadel paints, I have a couple sets of the following that I'm happy to send for the cost of postage (say £2).

- Macragge Blue
- Abaddon Black
- Retributor armour (gold)

hehe

Yup...

You used to be able to follow the edition release cycle a tad - editions lasted a few years, and revenues would drop off as they got older and stale.

Now,with both Age of Sigmar (fantasy v2) and 40k they've got a staggeringly steady approach to constantly rebalancing the game and ensuring continual revenues.

Further, they've really been massively successful with the skirmish and specialist games - Shadespire is a genuinely good 'board game' regardless of being AoS, and it's like crack with both pricing and adding in the deck building element.

Does help the recent sculpts and models are utterly stunning.

Been playing around with edge colouring on the armour, and boy is it hard!!!! Got a bit of over colour to sort out as a result. frown but I've settled on a light grey rather than a light blue, and yes I should have painted the heads before assembling, but face of the Sgt isn't that bad in real life, the photo just blows it out, however it does need touching up.

Also base colours and textures, which are a mix of salt and cornflour, coarse suger and corn flour, or just plain corn flour. Got a bit of over colour to sort out, .

When they're finished, I'll get the DSLR out and do some magazinesque type shots.
