Had a play with the Army Painters Strong Tone last night. First time I've used it and I'm very impressed with the results. These two where sprayed with Army Painters Necrotic Green and then a mix of GW and AP paints. One of the left has been given a coat of Strong Tone, the other hasn't:

So I've really caught the scenery bug recently - on top of the Kill Zone Mechanicus and Munitorium sets, I've just managed to find a load of the old Wall of Martyrs kits, including this bad boy, which is truly massive:

If you look closely, you can see the Dark Angels models on the walkway, to give you some idea of the scale of the thing!

I've currently completed the tower and have assembled and painted all the base and mid coats on the missile silo (one of the round end emplacements), plus I've painted the base and mid coats oin the Icarus Twin Las Cannon emplacement. Hoping to have all but the fine details done this weekend. smile

On another note, I've just received issues 4, 5 and 6 of the Conquest magazine.

The limited edition Primaris Lieutenant with issue 5 is really good sculpt - lots of Ultramarine details and he comes with bare head or helmet with laurel crown.

Issue 6 is just another 3 Easy to Build Plague Marines, so pretty much independent store retail price for the models.

Issue 7 comes with Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade washes for about the same price as independent retail, but great for me as my two are running out.

BUT, the real deal is issue 8 - this comes with the Primaris Librarian model, which even at independent retailers is £18, the magazine is only £8.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I prefer painting monsters than humans! I’ll finish the death guards and marines. I’ve got enough to keep me busy over the winter with the Tyranids and dragon.

I’d forgotten how long these things take to paint up!!!

Not sure if the mag is available in the shops post ep 4.

Then the fun will really begin as I’ve had an idea for a set / diorama, so I’ll design, 3D print and paint that up!

Am ahead of schedule with my painting for perhaps the first time in my life!

Anyone building up a death guard army - buy three copies of issue ten!

The MBHs work best in threes, and are an awesome little unit - huge resilience, pretty chunky shooting, decent in combat, and give everyone within a bubble a -1 to hit.

Shame about the additional pox walkers, but I think that's all the duplicate Easy to Build Death Guard packs out of the way, so future issues should have some interesting minis!

I'm intrigued how they're going to do the Rhino etc as that is 3 separate sprues, from memory? I wonder if they'll release them in back to back issues over 3 weeks or spread them out to keep people on the hook for longer?

I use a mix of a £3 set from Works for big areas, dry brushing and flat panels:

https://www.theworks.co.uk/p/paint-brushes/artist-...

And Windsor and Newton series 7 for detail work (could probably add a 00 size to this set):

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Winsor-Newton-Brush-Gift-...

Those are probably the cheapest and some of the most expensive brushes on the market.

I use Windsor and Newton Cotman series brushes. Think I paid about £3.50 a brush from this shop as I happened to be in London.

Windsor and Newton series 7 have had some massive quality issues in the last 12 months, which would have been absolutely unheard of previously.

Lots of theories regarding changes in materials /manufacture /etc.

I bought my two (a size 1, used 90% of the time, and a 00 used only for eyes/edge highlighting) from an old school art shop that probably bought their stock at some point in the 90s. Along with Masters brush soap, and they're just incredible. Truly improved my painting immediately.

Broken Toad and Rosemary & Co are great alternatives for a similar price.

I have asked a few people recently which brushes to get. Lots (well, several) people recommending the Army Painter Wargames Brush Set. You don't have to buy the whole set though. Consensus is that they are a lot better than the GW ones. A full set is around £30. They seem popular with the YouTube modelling video makers.

Other comments have been (as above) the cheap brushes from The Works can be surprisingly good, and if you are feeling rich, a Series 7 brush. I'm told that you should go a size bigger than the one you think you will need, the fine point on a good brush is what does all the work. Interesting that there are reports of quality assurance problems.

I would go into my local art supplies shop and have a look. There are other makes of sable brush which may be just as good, and cheaper, and it is nice to be able to choose a handful of various brush types.

By the way, if anyone who isn't a subscriber to Conquest magazine wants a Lt Calsius model or 3 of the Easy to Build Plague Marines (including a blight launcher model), then I can get you either of them for the cost of the magazine plus postage (totals £9.00). Let me know asap.

For anyone getting the mag, has anyone else noticed that in issue 7 that the paints for the models colours don't match the paints that have been issued? The Plagues pink bits (they have only sold Bugmans glow which is beige) and the Lt's face in particular (flesh toned).

Normally you'd start with Bugman's flow and then layer Cadian Fleshtone over it to brighten up. Maybe the Cadian colour is coming later?

Just as a thought, can anyone advise what colours are required to fully paint a Space Marine please.

When I used to paint miniatures I never once paid attention to the advised colour schemes, but I’d like to do these properly. I’m just wondering what I’d need v what I can fudge from the airbrush paints I’ve got.

Probably going to pick up a dragon at the weekend, but have a colour scheme in mind for that one that’s not GW!
Take a look at the Citadel Paint App, really useful tool if you don't know where to start.

That’s fine if they had supplied them, but they are showing models in a state that you can’t achieve as of yet with what they have supplied.
