So, this is where I'm at with the Wraith Host.

Still need to get some wave serpents and a set of Wraithblades to be a relatively solid list.

They look fantastic, Havoc. Well done.

I find if you paint in the frames of the canopies of the vehicles they tend to look a lot more realistic. This kind of idea:

You can even fully paint the canopies for a decent effect:

I have just received the latest Conquest sub, and there was an interesting letter in it. Apparently, there is a "limited-edition art book" that will be automatically sent in the next package if we decline it.

The art book is £14.99.

While the book itself might be great, I think the presumption that we want it and being opted in rather than opted out is a bit cheeky.

Has anyone else had this yet? Thoughts?

I saw a warning on reddit about it and emailed them to put a stop on it. A bit sneaky of them, but you can opt out if you spot it.

Very sneaky - especially considering we haven't been shown any images of the book or told about its contents.

Basically, you have to pay on a blind bet, which is unacceptable IMO.

Sway - any sign of that Wake The Dead box yet? I hear rumours that all of the box sets are now discontinued, so keen to get the Space Marine half while I still can!

Evening chaps, not been in this thread for ages so thought I better drop in and give a little update.

So I've emersed myself in the world of competitive 40k and so far I'm really enjoying it! Started with a couple of 1 day local store comps before going to Games Workshop Grand Tournament Heat 3 where I finished 47 out 120 with my Imperial Knights army. Not sure if I'll qualify, top 40 normally qualify but the field at Heat 3 was full of people (such as the Tabletop Tactics & Hulls Angels teams) that has already qualified. So it will depend on the results from Heat 4.

However I've signed up for Heat 1 of the 2019 Grand Tournament and Into The Hellstorm 2 (ITC comp)

For 2019 I've put together a Custodes army that I'm just putting the finishing touches on painting, will be really interesting to see how these go in a comp environment.

Between Christmas / New Year I went to The Honest Wargamer League of Knights comp - a Knight only tourney with alternating activations, over 100 Knights turned up for a giant robot rumble

I experimented with Tyranids (now on the back burner)

Started a Void Tridents spearhead full of Hellblasters

And continued to build Chaos characters with left overs from my bits box

I'll make more of an effort to keep the thread updated with tourny prep aand progress!

You'll struggle, all the Heats have sold out! They sometimes put cancelled tickets up for sale the Monday before the event. Heat 1 is Jun 15/16th. Could always meet up during the week before.

I'm currently playtesting a really nasty Deathwatch soup list!

Damn and blast - close to my birthday...

I think there's a lot of mileage in a strong Deathwatch element within Imperial Soup.

Seems a good counter to the likely meta-lists - Ynari especially as it'll be tough to get soulbursts when your base infantry are rocking 3++. Fortis kill teams seem to make Primaris a shoe in too - especially increased mobility for capping objectives in the CA18 missions.

It's more the SIA that wounds on 2s that has me hooked.

I have a few Knights which can mulch heavy armour, I have infantry squads that can hold home objectives and screen out against combat units.

3 x 5 squads of veterans, all with storm bolters, 2 in each with storm shields, 3 with chainswords. That's 120 shots hitting on 3s (re-rolling 1s) and wounding on 2s. That's enough to clear virtually any horde.

Wow, it's like a BF4 reunion in here!

Glad to hear you're getting into the gaming side of it Karl, my New Year's resolution is to finally get at least some of my models onto the table top!

There's a few more BF4 players into 40k!

Karl and Pilch were two of the guys Havoc and I met up with at WW a year ago - I'd already got back into the game.

Pilch is an absolute monster...

Done a little bit of painting to add to my burgeoning Ultramarines force over the Xmas break, but time is at a premium.

Probably my best achievement was picking this up for £64 delivered off eBay...

(sorry for the photo quality - that was from the auction ad, it looks even better in reality).

Bargain!

Sounds like you've got a bloody handy Ultras army coming together - and now knowing your address let's see if we can get Havoc, you and me over to 4TK in Colchester for some games...

Ha yes, taking into account the cost of the mini, I reckon it works out I paid the guy about £2 an hour to paint it!

Definitely up for a meet up - Wayland Games may be closer to you guys though?

Let me know what dates you can do and we can sort something out.

Pretty happy with how this mini came out considering it was speed painted in 3 hours and it was the first time I've tried painting a white mini.

Magazine contents right up to the end has been leaked - looks like the 2 next months could be quite good, but the dread and Rhino being split across two months does mean you're paying £16 for them, so still not a massive saving.

The repulsor is split across 4 motnhs, so £32 for a model you can buy for £40 today.

Overall, my suspicions are confirmed, from here on in unless you really want every model and paint, you're better off cancelling the subscription and just buying the models you do want from an independent.

That looks really bloody good for your first attempt at white.

It's an absolute pig, only rivalled by trying to get a vibrant yellow ime.

It does have to be said - for someone new to Warhammer wanting to get setup to play games at home, it is a bloody superb selection.

Two really quite large and flexible armies, with decent units. Loads of paints/technicals/brushes. Tonnes of accessories, scenery, etc.

Thanks Sway, there are definitely tricks to both white and yellow which I was unaware of until recently watching Youtube tutorials.

For that white, just start with a mid grey primer and heavy dry brush white in one direction from top to bottom. The trick is to get the consistency of the white paint reasonably thin so it doesn't build up in a chalky/lumpy finish. Then just go back over any areas of shadow that you've covered with your white dry brush in a mid grey to re-establish the shadow.

You really can get pretty decent tabletop results very quickly. The finish is a bit grainy for anything more than that though.

As for yellow, airbrush all the way. Either start with a darker yellow and build up to Flash Gitz Yellow (reportedly the best bright yellow on the market) or base coat white, then airbrush flash gitz, then wash down with yellow/brown wash to establish shadows.
