I think Mattel are less averse to,making one-off bits like wheel arches.

The Lego Countach was, for me, ruined by the wheel arches. Forgiveable on the Speed Champions one, not on the big one.

True story. There are (were) Airfix branded kits that were very close to the shape of the real cars. My lad got given a McLaren of some flavour.

It was satisfying in that it went together perfectly to give a faithful replica of the car, but for me there was none of the "cleverness" associated with the build.

Not once did I go "bugger me that's a cool way to make that shape out of all these blocks that are re-used everywhere".

For me, that's one of the main draws to Lego, but I'm not saying that should be the case for everyone.

That's an excellent point.

I certainly wouldn't want Lego to go too far, but custom wheel arches (where they form a significant part of the shaping) feels OK. Drawing the line is always tricky though.

Those are the Airfix Quick Builds or whatever. I agree with you, but my son loves them because he gets something that looks exactly like the real thing when he's done. They are generally much faster to assemble than a lego set too.

Airfix models is the reason I got back into Lego.

Lockdown. Popped to Lidl to get supplies (ok.....wine) and saw the Airfix Spitfire and HMS Victory. My older bro used to love Airfix so I thought 'that should pass some time'.

Hated it. Far too fiddly. Ended up stamping on the part assembled (badly) piece of crap and ordered the Technic mobile crane on Amazon. Arrived the next day and the rest is history!

For me with what Lego are charging for sets now, it would be justified to include more bespoke parts if it means the model is better looking when finished.

That E Type is awful and should have been so much better

I do like the new Hubble and I’m a big fan of all the space stuff but I feel like I’ve already got it as part of the Shuttle set which is a little disappointing

I cant say im a fan of that E-type, I dont think it looks good at all. Im quite suprised that has passed approval and being made into a set. It would be some what acceptable as a Speed Champs set but not scaled up as an Icons set.

Agreed. Lego really miss the mark with so many of their cars. Profit over representation wins.

Agree that E Type is awful, but if they start making too many bespoke parts then it takes away too much from it being Lego for me.

Some sets lend them selves really well to lego, like the BTTF Delorean and the Caterham.

However, if they cant build it to look haf decent then they shouldn't bother.

For me this E Type is one of the worst sets in recent years, it looks like a cheap Chinese fake.
