I posted this in Eurobricks but got no response.
I’m trying to build all of my and my daughters sets. I had most of my instructions still, but this ones driving me mad. I have a 1981 Lego book that has design ideas. I have all the pieces for this gantry crane, but can’t find the instructions online or in my house. Was it a rearrangement of another set? This is the only photo I have, from looking at all the sets, it has to be this. [url]

That’s definitely not a set; the old Lego ideas books have always had pictures of things you can make from contemporary sets but without instructions or details of exactly which you need.

One of the sets contributing to that is no doubt https://brickset.com/sets/733-1/Universal-Building...

I think you’re on to something. I also have the massive radar dish.
Will see how I get on building.
Thank you.

I used to love building versions of the ideas book models. It was much easier back then to identify how to build; SNOT makes it far harder to tell how something was constructed.

Thanks for the offer - very generous.

However a buddy of mine got me one from a Lego store "up North" smile

Studs Not On Top, where they cleverly manipulate the way the parts are put together so that a smooth side shows on top or by mounting them upside down.

SNOT example (spoiler if you don't want to see how Steamboat Willie is built) - I couldn't tell from the pictures of the completed model that the ends were done this way: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7832/46688883564_03...

I did my Mustang over the weekend. Very nice. Some interesting build methods involved and a nice solid finished model.

Rather disapoinyed with a number of missing parts which are now on order.
