You see this is what I hate about clubs. Whole bunch of hand wringers with stories about how dangerous and how idiotic. Like a little mothers meeting circle.
It makes me want to just yell 'Man up'.
I take on board regarding the limitations of flying in quite a restricted area and that I am far more likely to damage the plane in that scenario. I also take on board peoples commenst about what areas they fly in and why, and thank them for the feedback.
But the comments regarding danger and the threat to life and limb of neighbours or myself are just irritating nannying comments.
You seem eccentric, and perhaps lacking in being "grown up" so I'll explain in basic terms. It makes me want to just yell 'Man up'.

Its all very well playing in your back garden with your home made engineering projects - but once they are released into the outside world the risk of an accident goes exponential, and you are the responsible party.
If you cant be responsible with your models then it would be best you keep them somewhere where the can do no harm to others.
The hand wringing, mothers meeting circle who need to man up (and that you have contempt for) at your local club are probably very glad that you are not choosing to inflict your "special" outlook on life upon them or their model flying club.
They probably also couldn't care less what you think of them - because they get to fly their models at a good, dedicated facility, and get an enormous amount of enjoyment from it. You on the other hand are consigned to flying out of your back garden or chancing it somewhere else.
Examples of the potential safety risks which a competent and responsible flyer is mindful of:-

Complete Noob here. I got a small quadrocopter for Christmas and am just learning to fly it indoors. I've often thought RC flying offers the best of both worlds - the flying itself and watching an aircraft flying past. Not to mention it's a lot cheaper than the real thing!
Having done a bit of reading about it over Christmas, FPV flying looks interesting. I think mastering the cheap drone I got for Christmas is the 1st step. It's a Lian Sheng LS-115 and so far is proving very resilient, I must have crashed it over 100 times!

Yours looks a bit more proper than mine! I used to love my ATC flights in chippies. I'm very jealous!
Oddly, this one is much smaller than the ones that I flew in my mid teens......

I've recently moved up to a glow powered Acrowot, a very different beast from the foamie electric trainer I was on before - it's almost like starting all over again.
I went down the club route and have to say the help and advice I've received there has been invaluable. Just having some experience on hand to check over and trim the plane for your first flight is a load off your mind. I wouldn't recommend getting into the hobby any other way.

Just an update. Christmas week was the first fly of the aircraft in the back garden, after many hours spent on the phoenix flight simulator. (Thanks for that by the way, very useful advice).
bit of a problem getting airspeed off in the 120m available. Doable, but not comfortable. The actual flying was fine, the plan is a fairly slow flyer so time to collect my thought between turns.
Landing was comming in off the large field, clearing a set of trees and then power off and holding my nerve till the speed had gone before a landing and tipped nose on the grass.
No damage done, and an enjoyable time.

scratch building a spitfire Gasser at the moment
need a new air frame to re home a da50 Gasser in probably a Pitts python or ultimate bi plane for that

they do go over the top at some clubs a bit im not really a club person like to goriller fly
but iv been flying a good few years but stuff can still go wroung and some stuff can make a lot of claret
but some stuff will kill you if you not experienced
a 50 or 600 size heli your bones will stop the blade`s but it will make a mess
a 90size nitro or 700 electric will take you head clean off with the blade tips doing 200mph/2000 plus rpm
as for planks i would not recommend trying to fly a large Gasser in you garden or a gas turbine
but im glade it went well
sim are a great help now
i learned helis first the hard way

hi chaps,
Having owned a trainer as a teenager. Same story as others, the club wasn't interested - my first instructor led flight crashed and I guess partly due to the club clique I never returned.
I really enjoyed the build up of the kit, and would like to revisit that too. But before I do, I keep looking at the simulators. The RealFlight one looks great and I like the idea of the tutorials - would that be the best way to go, whilst i try to find a non clique club, and build the next kit ?
