You can buy it as a kit, but will need to buy the body separately.
I originally wanted a kit, as RTR put me off at first, but looking past it I’m glad I got it now. You can still take it all apart just the same as a tamiya, and there’s tons of upgrades, so you’ll be rebuilding slowly anyway over time!

This, absolutely.

Just finished mine & gave up on the decals, doing only some of the large ones & lights - I'm only going to rag it around & didn't buy it to be a shelf queen!
Trick with the decals is the use a hair dryer, when heated they conform to the curves a lot better.

Top tip - there are different size white plastic spacers - One size for the 4wd shaft and the others for the wheels.

Don't use the wheel ones for the shaft as they are a little small - When you come to do the wheels and discover the plastic spacers are too big you realise you need to disassemble the shaft.

And that is pretty much the last operation affecting something that is number 3 or 4 in the instructions.

biggrin
Ha ha yes I made exactly that error when building mine!

By the way the absolute first thing to consider is buying a steel bearing set, this improves efficiency and therefore run-time on a battery charge.

For example:

I made that mistake as well. That link is dangerous...

Need to stop procrastinating and start masking.

Thanks for those - not sure I'm going to go down the LED route.

Mildly terrified of the decals. hehe

Hair drier really is the key to success on things like this, a little heat makes a huge difference

Picked mine up a couple of years back in Japan. Turns out I need a global pandemic to finally finish the build! Have enjoyed the build of it more than driving it, the Monster Beetle is more of a fun drive. Nostalgia value is off the charts though.

Dont be fooled by the RTR tag. At £400+ these are not toys and they need to be serviced and maintained to keep working properly. They are complicated vehicles.
You WILL be taking apart diffs and gearboxes and replacing electronics and upgrading.
The TRX4 does come as a kit you just need to add electronics I think.
If money is no issue the TRX4 with the Land Rover shell is one of the nicest out there.
But it is more of a relaxed, considered form of the hobby, certainly not as reckless as bashing.
Personally I am looking at a Carisma Coyote.

I'd agree on this. I have an HPI Bullet MT Flux and it needs parts. I also have an Arrma Senton 3s, and a car that's capable of 50mph isn't a 'toy'. The Monster Beetle however is a hoot (once you've fixed the gearbox issues). There is something special about Tamiya cars, especially if you played with them when you were younger.

The TRX4 in high gear doesn’t hang about too though, it’s not just for low speed crawling

7 or 8 mph from what I have seen on line. I can’t justify that kind of spend but they are very nice. I would love the build.

I am trying to find a TT-02B Plasma Edge II but no luck. Our friends at Jadlam are still showing shipping in 1-2 days and have been all week. May have to look elsewhere.

Progress of sorts, but the black front grill is a bit of a bd to mask....

If you intend using your car I wouldn't spend too much time getting everything perfect - After my first run the car's body looked like it was 30 years old biggrin.

Mind you it was a blast - these things are FAST smile

A small amount of spray bleed under the front grill, but otherwise it's begun!

How many hours between coats?

Very light first spray coat and then 10 to 15 mins between heavier coats

Well, fked up with the front grill somewhat - too liberal with the last coat trying to get it into the corners - it bled under the masking. Ho hum. It will just have to have that slightly battered rally look. Rest of it has turned out fine.

Once the myriad of decals are on it will probably look fine. (They appear to need to be cut out... arse.)

Quite nostalgic getting high on spray paint again.hehe

You might want to consider yoga or meditation prior to attempting the decals wink

It did cross my mind that I could prevaricate by trying to find HB decals ....
