As great as the Tracer is, I'd say it's probably a bit too quick for my 3.5 year old unless it's in a big open space then he tends to get fed up rather quickly. He's been at me to use it in the house but it's just too fast, even wound right back.

I'm debating something like an FTX Outback Mini 3.0... he loves Defenders and they're sort of borderline crawler spec so much slower so I think he'd get more from it, plus would like setting up obstacles and such like indoors or in the garden. The Tracer's just a bit quick.

Still undecided but it's no bad reflection on the Tracer, it's a great little thing for the money but maybe not suited to really little people for their first step into R/C stuff... maybe be just goes full pelt and hit hits something solid or disappears into the sunset. Gets that from his Mums driving I guess.

So 5 years ago i started this thread and bought an FTX Tracer for our at the time 4 year old.

It's finally gone to the off road track in the sky this summer, beaten, battered, drowned and repaired several times it's been a super toy for him.

Now his little brother is after one!

Is the answer for first time introduction for kids to RC still an FTX Tracer or have things moved on or updated at all?

I can see very similar looking trucks from RCG MT-One or Blakzon - are they all pretty much the same kit?!

Hmm.. the FTX stuff does seem to get pretty decent review
Youtuber Wheelie Yellow uses a comparatively cheap FTX Tracer chassis for all of his antics. His videos are a pretty good testament to the sturdiness of the FTX product, IMHO.

Ha, timely post as my little boys one died a couple of weeks back. Powers up but nothing responds and my diagnostic skills are lacking... and parts darts seems uneconomical as a new one is sub £100. However I'd echo, brilliant thing that has has been absolutely abused for about 3yrs.

So I'm also thinking about what to buy... including crawlers but I think a basher / buggy / stadium truck sort of thing would be best suited.

Bit more money but a HBX16889a pro is prob the best budget basher around now. About £80ish from Bangood.

Thought I’d resurrect this thread…I’m planning on buying my near 8 year old an RC car for his bday in a couple of weeks, and as the FTX Tracer is mentioned a good few times on PH, I think that’s what I’m going to buy (the brushed version for just under £70).

Unless, you guys have other suggestions?!

I've recommended the FTX Tracer to a few colleagues who have got fed up spending £30-60 on ste supermarket-type RC cars and they all rave about them. And pass the word on.

Still don't think they can be beaten for price, suitability for beginners / small 'uns, and out-n-out ruggedness.

All I've had to replace on ours are the front bumpers, at £6 each. Mind you they'll probably get trashed again pretty quickly.

Our second one for the youngest is still going super strong and getting all the abuse the first one had.

Great bit of kit for such a reasonable outlay.

Oh I should probably add an honourable mention for the MN99 Defender RC car from Aliexpress etc.

They're not as sturdy, you might not get proportional steering if you don't choose carefully, but they're decent crawlers and there's a mass of spares and upgrades for them. Come in sub £40 although you can end up spending a lot more.

There are now any number of clones in different shapes - Disco 2, Range Rover Classic, LandCruiser, Lada Niva and more.

But definitely a slower speed crawler, not as robust as a Tracer. Not worse, just different.

I bought my youngest an FTX 1:24 Crawler for Christmas, it seems like a pretty decent bit of kit. The smaller size and low speed make it ideal to use indoors.

I'd echo that.

I bought one, the grey Defender, via AliExpress for something like £27 delivered and set my expectations very low. In all honesty, for £27 it's brilliant. We've had hours of use from it building obstacle courses involving the sofa, sand, mud, bits of Lego or whatever else gets in the way.

Oh and the Tracer died, I think water got into the receiver and killed it but just checked back this thread and it was 5yrs I bought it for him so the fact it lasted this long is utterly astonishing.

Hi all. Bought my son an FTX Tracer (brushed) in the end. Haven’t given it a go as yet but did connect up the lights etc. Got a question about charging the battery though - I noticed the manual says to disconnect the battery and remove from the car. However, having plugged the battery to the receiver, the plugs seem super tight, so pulling them apart again isn’t quite so straight-forward. I could just pull harder but obviously don’t want to bust anything smile

My question is, does the battery really need to be disconnected from the receiver or can I just charge with the battery connected and in place?! Oh, and any tips on how I can prise apart the connectors (as I’m sure I’ll need to at some point).

Ta.
