look on hyperflight - they do an electric version of the elf now and they sell the motor/ESC I think.

I’ve launched my Elf up to 45m into a slight breeze which I couldn’t believe at the time, usually it’s more like 30-35m. I reinforced the throwing peg when i built it as i figured i would be giving it some stick.
Too late - it is basically done, The motor is on a carbon fibre pylon over the CG point with a tiny ESC under the void in the center of the wing at the back and an original flight battery..... Only added 21g

With lockdown I am enjoying building and I am currently working on new to market (last year) wooden kit - the Gruner 'slope infusion' from https://www.hoelleinshop.com/Planes-Helicopters-Qu... And the associated case From https://www.cnc-hagershop.de/?product=transportkof...

It currently looks like this (sat on its case)

I am fitting some LEDs - these have some flashy modes...... Should be easy to spot!

I fancy doing one of the big 3m RES floaters with the same case next.....

2 piece wing Auri in order from Dmitriy in Russia. Will probably be 4-5 weeks.

Nice package arrived this morning with 4x KST X08 servos and a few bits - damn those things are tiny!

Going to be a long wait...

Niiiiice! - usually takes a while to come from Russia and the tracking is worse than useless...... I have a couple of gliders from jimaero (also a Dmitry) and it can take a good while for things to arrive..

But when your parcel does arrive and you open it to reveal those perfect and sexy carbon wings and fuselage it will be a good daycoolcoolcool
Nerve wracking cutting into them though..... Measure 6 times, question yourself, measure again....
I once glued a vertical stabiliser on to a fuselage a degree out - on a £700 machine thats a real bummer.

I wimped out and paid him the €90 to build it for me! just need to fit the servos, receiver and battery - even in can’t f that up!

From the first (gentle) toss you will love it....... The level of performance is immediately evident, And as you get it dialed in the leap in performance from the elf will be significant and addictive!

And you get to do those full flap hand catches smokin

I have only been doing DLG for 3/4yrs and still have lot to learn (which I like) I have flown a fair few types of RC aircraft but these carbon DLGs fly like nothing else!

This thread doesn't seem to have a lot of support, but thought I'd throw this in anyway.

Bought second hand, I've done a small amount of remedial work, as well as adding a pilot and a few cockpit details. Haven't flown it yet, so I've still got that to look forward to.

It is a niche within a niche within a niche though isn't it? Firstly there is RC generally which has an image problem in this country.
And then within that there is RC flight - and within that niche is gliders....on a car forum

I only really fly gliders these days as I can see the sport in it and despite having flown for years I now mostly fly powered gliders and DLG (the ultimate niche within gliding)

That's a nice scale looking machine - what wingspan is it (4m?) Will you slope it or fly off the flat?

I am the solitary guy in ski goggles on a hill in a 60mph gale grinning from ear to ear seeing how close to a crash I can get......

I have only started looking at the illuminated model above again this week - hoping to be ready to fly/crash in the next few weeks although there is a lot of wiring stuff to do first!

It's a 6m Ventus. It has retracting undercarriage and a tow hook fitted, but I intend to slope it as we have a very nice slope on the North Downs, and the slopes of the South Downs are only a couple of hours away.

I couldn't see your photo and assumed the 6m was a typo. Having Googled I see it wasn't! Fabulous model but something you definitely don't want to crash.

Maidened my Auri F3k today - huge difference in performance compared to my Elf. I feel like i’ve gone from a bicycle to a superbike!

Hooked up a couple of weak thermals - this thing is awesome. Bottled out at 176m

Some slight damage from a launch mode error, nothing done epoxy won’t fix though. Can’t wait to get it in the air again tomorrow. Will try and get some photos.

Ace - Feels good having a proper performance glider doesn't it!?!
When I got the ELF it was a leap in performance from foamies etc and then I wondered if the carbon jobs would be that much better....and like you within minutes I was smitten!

What colours do you have your Auri in? (Pic?) - I have gone to 340m once - blink and it's gone!

The Auri is simply awesome! Had a hell of a session on Monday morning, was out in the field opposite my house having a bit of a throw, there were a few weak thermals about so it was entertaining. The farmer who owns it came over with his dogs and we were chatting, gave it a good launch and hooked up into a decent thermal. I live in North Devon so it pretty rural, fields Exmoor etc, and I don't know how common this is but a buzzard spotted my plane and decided to glide over and join me in the thermal at about 75m or so - fantastic! He drifted around a bit so I followed him figuring he could sense the thermals far better than I could and WOHOO we're both in a very strong thermal, circling up and up - at about 150m another Buzzard and Peregrine join in so there are now four of us circling away - unbelievable! I top out at 239m at which points its getting harder and harder to see the attitude of the plane so I bail and head for home with the biggest grin on my face. Had my neighbour not been there no one would ever have believed me I'm sure!

I wondered home after that thinking, after 2 days flying I'd probably just had the best flight I would ever have! It turns out on Tuesday I had another flight with just the one buzzard up to about 150m so maybe this will be a regular occurance? Here's hoping!

As for the colour - I ordered basically a green pattern , but Dmitriy messed up and I got kind of red/orange/yellow - which I don't hate, but would have preferred green. He threw in a ballast set and knocked a bit off so I'm happy overall.

A few weeks back I acquired a 5m ASH26 (1:3.6 scale). It needed a small amount of tidying, and I installed a different power supply system for the receiver and servos, and took it for it's first flight (by me) a week ago.

Now that's more like it!
Reminds me of chucking my Multiplex DG600 off the local cliff, there's nothing like flying the bigger models the energy they carry is brilliant!
It's still in the attic not flown for years now cry

Just stumbled onto this thread. What a wonderful thing.
I fly full sized gliders - nothing better than getting and staying in a thermal to cloud base. Just awesome fun.

Is it possible to just buy a fun RC controlled machine without having the hassle and time commitment of having to build it (not to mention the technical expertise).
I spend my days fiddling about with mechanical and tech stuff, and I really can't afford the time away from the family to do it in the evenings as well.
I'd be really interested in having a go though, and would be willing to chuck a few quid at it.

what's the thoughts?

cheers guys.

Are you looking to replicate full size thermaling or just for some sport flying with some thermal performance?

Most of the F3k / DLG models come virtually fully built, for example the Elf. the hardest bit for me is programming the controller with all the modes and mixes. The more control surfaces you have, the more complex this becomes. Something like a WildThing flying wing is fairly simple as it’s just elerons, Elf dlg is rudder + elevator, Auri dlg is Rudder + Elevator + Ailerons(flaperons) then something like a F5k or Yoda with flaps you have crow braking capability which basically stops the plane dead on landing/ catching.

(DLG is Discus Launch Glider or F3k)

SOAROTX program for OTX is great but took me hours and hours as a beginner to get working.

There are quite a few smaller size models that come pretty much ready to fly, with servos already installed. All you need to do is ad a receiver and battery.

Having flown a number of different sized model gliders, the bigger ones do tend to be much more efficient, but a lot of fun can be had with the smaller ones slope soaring rather than trying to stay aloft using thermals.
