On the subject of model figures, I picked up these two for £1.92 (including shipping) from AliExpress. Although that was an introductory price as it was my first order the actual price was only about £6.60 for the pair. They're 1:16 scale and the quality is actually very good.

They're 3D printed and no fancy packaging or instructions.

I have a few from Alibaba as well.

My two from SOL cost me £85....

yes...it did hurt :-(

One of my WIPs. I wanted something quick and satisfying after a bit of a lay-off and when looking through the stash for something suitable I found an Academy P-47D.

First Academy kit I’ve done, but I’ve been impressed at the fit and engineering when hiding seam lines and stuff. The plastic is very soft would be my only criticism.

Will aim to get it painted and finished this week smile

All the academy kits I’ve built have gone together pretty well, but the decals were very brittle.

That’s interesting to know and daunting as the scheme I’d chosen has a checker nose cowl. I might rethink that then…

If I were attempting that, based on past experience I would immediately try and get some aftermarket decals (or paint masks). I wouldn't even try the kit decals, but then again you never know.

The second scheme is a polished metal one, which I’ll perhaps bite the bullet and try.

Ironically I bought this kit by mistake as I bought some decals to recreate a Hethel plane then realised it’s the wrong type. The Hethel B-24 has stalled as I was unsure how to do the silver scheme on that so I’ll maybe use the P-47 as a trial…

I’ve just built an Academy P-38. Really impressed with the fit and details (not too much, but good where it matters), but I’ll echo the decal comment. Normally I don’t have any issues with decals, even old ones, but I tore one and at least two tried to wrap themselves around the tool whilst I was putting them on…

Thanks. I don’t really want to order any extras for what was only meant to be a quick and fun build, so I think I’ll make an attempt at using their decals for this scheme:

I have this decal set in stock ready for a future build:

Which I think will have enough spares for a rescue if needed!

WIP Airfix reboxed Accademy. Aging to do a bit of scratch building as the kit doesn’t correctly represent either of the supplied schemes. The most obvious, and easiest to do, is the extra armour extensions. A couple of brass tubes create the holders for the cover. Still got to do the rear armour extensions, this includes a cable reel, I have a 3D printed one but have to make the holder. There is also a box on the front fender that will have to be scratch built unless I have something suitable in the spares box. There were also apparently vents cut into the rear engine deck to aid cooling, no idea where exactly as I can only find side photos of the real thing.

Picked this up because I wanted a nice relaxing build, it’s turning out to be anything but.

Good work, amazed you got their eyeballs painted!

What kind of base are you going for? One of my WIPs is a diorama that’s stalled (again).

Something muddy I suspect.

Looking for something to build it on.

Have some picture frames that may work:-)

Yes, decals provided for this specific vehicle
https://www.militaryimages.net/media/m7-priest-art...

The kit represents the early as built, before the armour extension flaps were added, so any M7 around El Alamein or operation Torch, but nothing later. Strangely the original Academy boxing included those options, including a British version, although it’s missing the side skirts.

I have built one, and have a Mk.VIII to build with the LaminarFlowDesign MK.XIV conversion kit, the only problem is where you put them when done!!!

Decided on a bare metal/silver scheme on the P-47. Mainly to see how it goes! AK’s black base applied, looks a little orange-peely but hopefully if anything it’ll add some interest to the silver over.

Got a choice of stainless, aluminium or chrome. Think I’ll try the aluminium. Did debate the chrome as AK’s chrome isn’t as shiny as real chrome but I’ll maybe pick an odd panel out in that later.

Or it’ll all gone wrong and end up in the bin hehe

You could paint a few different panels in different colours, like control surfaces, ammunition covers, inspection panels etc. then if you think the contrast is too much, overspray with the mid tone to blend everything a bit. I did this with an Academy Thunderjet with Alclad, and it looked ok.
