Any love for the Peugeot 508?

I sit at the same roundabout each day, looking at this very car, and it seems to me that there's an awful lot to like.
Yes, it's not a PH Superhero. It runs on cancer and has four doors. But for something to get you 'to and fro' it seems to tick a lot of boxes.
Handsome looks, low tax, economical diesel engine, toys, good price.
Up at £7300, you'd hope to get a bit of a a deal. One owner, 60k, FSH, 3 years old.
Am I the only one with a soft spot?

I had the Peugeot 407 estate as my first car, quite liked it. Seemed alright as a first car.
When the need for another estate came along I looked at the Citroen C5 tourer - IMHO a handsome car.
Sadly, after a few years of German machinery the driving position, lack of power and toys put me off for the money. £7000 for something poverty-spec wasn't my cup of tea. I guess I got used to full leather interiors
The 508 sounds decent though, perhaps worth a spin?

A chap at work had formed a short list of cars for his new company car. I suggested that he also test drive the 508, and that's what he subsequently bought. Estate version. Said it drove significantly better than the Mondeo.

I was a passenger in one a few weeks ago. A taxi at night and sitting the back I could not work out what I was in.
Spaciius, I was un the back, decent quality leather, nicely lit dash, no squeaks or rattles.
I guessed I was in something Korean so asked the driver what we were in.
He really sang its praises. The car was a hybrid, with 30k on it and was immaculate.
The driver was one of those old school county town cabbies. Semi retired, he only did about 12k a year and used the car as his private car too.
He loved it!
I had 2 and wouldn't hesitate in having a 3rd.
Both were ex Peugeot Management cars, I did 5k in the first one until a 26 ton truck decided to write it off. The fact that the driver was on my car roof to get me out and thought he'd killed me, was one reason 7 days later I had an almost identical replacement.
I'm pleased to say I was able to get out of the car unaided and with just a scratch to my neck where the seatbelt cut in.

Always seems as if it has too low a boot in both saloon & estate versions, which would put me off buying in the 0-5 years old bracket, but the deprecation after that would work for this Pug lover. The semi ruggedised version of the car - 508 RXH is pretty good, squashed boot or not to my eyes.

Hmmm. That doesn't sound like a particularly well balanced fight. Couple of years ago I drove an estate 110hp 1.6 derv. From Margate to Madrid then a week later I drove Madrid to Barcelona to Margate. The car was packed to the roof with no space to spare with stuff for a film festival. It was quite well speced with sat nav etc I was not going for hypermileing but I think it averaged around 50mpg it could do with being around 130-140hp with a dollop more torque and it would have been better. Nice car.

There is a thread on here somewhere with pictures of the post re-modelling. He admitted to speeding to the Police (outside a Primary School) and shunted me across the road, through a hedge and into a field. Even now I remember looking down and seeing every warning light illuminated and various buzzers sounding and my 1st thought was how am I going to get this out of here

There has just been a facelift which looks much much better. Give it a few months and there will probably be lightly used ones about for not much money. But nearly all diesel.I like everything about the 508 except that the interior is rather boring and the rear lights on the estate don't look very nice.
They are surely one of the most under-rated cars out there. With the new Mondeo being massively late and getting mixed reviews I would have thought there was an opportunity for Peugeot to target current Mondeo owners. But I guess that this sector is mostly driven by fleet sales.
