Not too bad actually - centre & rear exhaust mounts shot and handbrake not quite up to scratch. Mounts are pretty easy to sort but not so sure about the handbrake - don't think the 172s have a compensator do they?

Been quoted £800 to do the timing belt, dephaser pulley and auxiliary belt. I know I 'should' get it done but I've still not decided what to do with the car yet and I doubt getting it done makes it worth £800 more confused

And a couple of pics - bit dirty but much better than it has been until recently.

Exhaust mounts go for a pastime on these & the handbrakes are useless!

£800 sounds expensive, had mine done 3yrs ago from memory at a decent specialist & it was less than that.

No, it won't add any value really but anybody buying will want proof it's been done OR they'll negotiate accordingly.

Drive it, they get under your skin, you'll want to keep it wink

It already has but I have a TVR in the garage that never gets driven - it'll get relegated to third place at this rate! laugh

That's mega expensive.

Dan at sjm did mine for £600ish although it means a trip down to Somerset and his ' lab clean ' workshop wink

I would want the water pump, fresh oil and filter at least for that price.

It looks pretty clean from the pics.

IMO, if you have the time, do the belts yourself - you can pick up a full parts kit (OEM) and a set of used locking tools for 300-350ish, and it'll take a bit of time, but if you've got space/patience for it it's not a bad job with the right tools.

I did 16 valves, head gasket, head bolts, water pump, aux belt and cambelt for 400 quid with some patient eBaying.

Id get it done pronto if you're driving it about. Without they're a ticking time bomb for them snapping and the car being written off due to engine damage.

£800 is far too much, you should be looking at half of that.

Handbrake can be tightened if the rear pads/discs are in good nick. There's an adjustment nut under the exhaust heatshield below the handbrake mechanism. Did mine without removing the exhaust but if you're replacing the mounts anyway you may as well drop it to aid access.

Bolts holding the heatshield on are torx from memory and will be rusted to buggery. Get some new ones and penny washers in case the heatshield is rusty before attempting.

For a timing chain, dephaser pulley and auxiliary belt? The parts cost more than that!

If you know somewhere in the southeast that can do it for that, then I'm all ears

Thanks Stoat - I didn't miss it, I just read it as being how much the parts were, not a price including the labour.

Dad's has got climate as well so that pushed it up to around 550 inc VAT (assuming I have read it correctly?). And it's only another 70-odd for the water pump as well, so I think I'd be daft not to get that done at the same time.

I don't know where you are pricing the parts from but your figures are way off! When I got mine done in 2015 the prices were around as follows:

-Timing belt kit ; £120
-Dephaser ; £150
-Aux belt kit ; £75(ish).

I was going to change the above myself but considering the tools are £250+ for a job I'll only ever do on a 5 year basis I paid someone in the end smile.

Renault oddly enough were the cheapest for the parts and their aux belt was the only ones that fitted without hassle. Gates etc. were a pain to fit onto AC equipped cars.

I got the above changed by the now very much gone Fred at BTM Performance for £600. There were a couple of others doing them for £550 (Diamond Motors in Nottingham) and £450 (ClioTurbo ; until recently I wondered how the hell they did them so cheap ; their labour bill seemed below the average and I am sure Fred was saying it too even him 4 hours or so to change the belt!

A local garage wanted £460 without the dephaser and didn't seem to know what the pulley was!

But you are right about the Southeast. Mark Fish Motorsport charge the previous owner of my car £778 for just the belt kits (and not the dephaser) back in 2010!

ANYWAY smile.

The rattling will be down to the dephaser pulley. To quote Fred:

"They sound like a skeleton having a wk at idle if the dephaser is gone".

£800 does sound like alot for having the belts changed on a 172 Cup even if it does have AC.

I used to use these guys:

Very South! They knew what they were doing and pricing was reasonable though.

That's how I read it. I haven't used them myself but I have heard good things!

Have used this place though but I can't remember what they charge for 172's:

http://www.ren7oaks.co.uk/garage/index.php

For reference though belts/water pump/all the other guff was £550 for my Megane and they have done lots of other work for me and been brilliant. Just depends how far you want to travel I guess!

Engine Dynamics - £630 incl labour and VAT
Ren7oaks about £760

That's for Cambelt, Dephaser, Aux belt and water pump.

Thanks everyone for helping with this and offering advice - I think I have to get it done irrespective of whether I keep it or sell it beer
