a close friend of my GFs is getting rid of her old 205, its a carbed 1.1 from 89 with over 200K on the clock. Itll be taken to the scrappy on saturday, but it still runs well, has 9 months MOT, costs fk all to tax/insure... and still runs well.

I can pick it up for €150-200, but im kinda unsure of what to do with it. Is it easy to swap the 1.1 for a TU3? I have no illusions about it being anywhere close to a GTI, but a 3 door stripped out 205 with a 1.4 should be fun enough.

The 1.1 is a TU, too, so - yep - it'll just swap straight over. There's really nothing to 'em, very very simple - and a hoot to drive. We had a 1.1/4spd 3dr for about 7-8yrs until the start of last year, and I miss it.

Cool, just to check though, would i need to source a full TU3 with carb etc? or would a bottom end be enough? Im more familiar with the fiat FIRE engines, and there you can just swap a 1.2 bottom end under a 1.1 head.

Being able to swap just the bottom end would make it easier to find i think.

The carb on a 1.1 is a tiny little thing - so, tbh, if I was wanting to increase power, first thing I'd do would be to look at improving that. I'd definitely be going with a complete engine. Can't imagine it's going to be a lot different to source, anyway. A block that's been sat around without a head would probably need work. IIRC, it's a wet liner engine, so the bottom seals would be suspect straight off.

Kitchski would be the man to speak to. He might even know of an engine.

Reason id prefer a bottom end would be because they will be easier to find, carbed 205s are getting extremely rare (here in the netherlands anyway), so being able to get any old TU3 bottom end from a 106 or even 206 would be miles easier.

That said, if the 1.1 carb/head arent up to it, there is no real point in keeping those.

That said, the 205 is a light little car, i took it around the block last night and while it certainly isnt fast, it isnt slow either, so the engine swap wouldnt be a #1 priority

It will be and well worth the effort if the shell is sound.

I had an XT and loved it.

I bought the car for 150 euros last weekend, its sitting over at the inlaws (along with the father in law's 3 peug 404 projects :P), so i havent had a chance to really check it out all over, but first inspection was promissing.

Ill have a look underneath it next weekend, as the towbar will be removed first thing anyway

Im quite surprised by how scarce 205 bits are in the used market though, engine wise i might have to find a 106 donor and deal with FI, or go full mix and match and put bike carbs and ITBs on a stripped down 1.4 SPI lump

Not sure if you are ever over here in England but I currently have a 1360cc TU3-2 (carbed) engine sitting in my garden in London. Removed it from my 106 a few years back and its been replaced with a 1.6 16v from a C2 VTS so its just collecting cobwebs now. Was fine when it was in the car, but i decided to restore the shell and figured i'd go the whole hog. Let me know if you are interested...

Nah, im in the netherlands, postage on a TU lump would defeat the entire idea.

Im currently mulling over what to do, i think (emphasis think), a TU3 bottom end should fit under a TU1 lump, and considering my current head has a mechanical distributor and fuel pump (which for simplicity's sake id like to keep), that would make the whole operation rather much simpler.

Either way, ive got different projects to deal with while the weather is still good, the little pug will be the winter hobby this year
