Hi all,

Been offered a Megane 225 on 117k miles really rather cheap (circa £1200) on the provision that it has some problems and niggles that need fixing.

The issues include both windows (known faults!), a steering wobble at speed, various rattles and bad trim etc etc. Otherwise reported as good tyres, good engine, pulls well, blah blah blah.

For that money, it seems like quite a serious proposition as a cheap daily that I can throw around a track (perhaps some money spent on replacing bushes etc) and won't be too upset if it gets binned.

Thoughts? Run a mile as the owner says it's a hateful thing that he wants rid of cheap because it keeps breaking? laugh

I've got a 2006 225 F1 that's on 85k that has had all of the issues you've mentioned. Even after a new steering rack something is still clunking in the steering. Interior sounds like the dash is loose and the drivers door is about to fall off at any given moment.
Also got the engine light on with "crankshaft position not learnt" or something along those lines. I don't know what it is now because K-tec "mapped it out" but it still comes on, just with no code to read!!
The beauty of all this though is that none of this stops it from being extremely fast, and great fun to drive. I can't think of anything else I'd spend <2k on if I wanted to get around a track fast.
Oh and also - if he says the air con needs regassing it doesn't. The aircon will be broken wobble

Run a mile. It's too cheap so it'll be an absolute basket case.

Even good ones are money gobbling fragile pains in the arse.

I fancied a cheap hot hatch and was considering a Clio 182 in November but bought a Megane 225 instead, the Meg just seemed more grown up (i'm 47), plus i'd never owned a proper Turbocharged car before (had a phase 1 Citroen XM 2.0 Turbo but it was low pressure and pretty gutless), the Meg was £1900 from a trader, a 54 plate 225 LUX, 119000 miles, part service history, so far it's been great, EVERYTHING WORKS, pano roof (lovely), auto headlights, cruise control, electric folding mirrors, windows, keyless entry and start (bit of a gimmick TBH), engine seems great, pulls very well, quick enough for me, it drives fantastic and handles great.

It has the trim rattles as mentioned but i can live with that, the pano roof sounds horrendous when its frosty (it creaks and cracks), only hassle i've had was a swivel hub bearing siezed (check on your car as that could be the issue), these are a very common problem on Sport Meganes, the bearings are not hard to change if you are handy with spanners, (i'm an ex Mechanic), other hassle was the drivers door wouldnt latch and i had to drive home holding the door shut, it's closing now but still not fully sorted, also the engine turns over really slow when cranking, even with a new battery, dont know if thats normal or not ?, never failed to start anyway.

Issues not really surprising for any 14YO car TBH.

I fitted a set of 45mm lowered P.I springs, 20mm spacers on the rear and 10mm on the front and in my eyes it sits perfect on the silver Phase 1 wheels, plant to fit new engine mounts and timing belt in the next few weeks, will be keeping the Meg for a while as i love it.
