Best place if you're looking to buy is on the classifieds on Cliosport.net

You want to buy from an enthusiast ideally, then you can be pretty sure most niggles that these come with will have been taken care of and generally looked after

Don't be put off by mileage either, as long as the history is great and the belts and dephaser have been done they're pretty solid engines

I have a Racing Blue 182 Full Fat (both Cup packs) and the mileage is approaching 150k but in the last two years it's had thousands spent on it, mostly by the previous owner and the history is amazing. Had a full suspension rebuild before I bought and it feels tight

Depending on what you're using it for, the 172 Cup is the most engaging drive as it doesn't have ABS, TC, AC and thinner glass with no luxuries

The 182FF I have now is a much better daily, auto lights and wipers, cruise control, AC but still handles brilliantly on our hoons, doesn't feel slower than my 172 Cup did

So depends what you're buying it for, if it's a toy buy a 172 Cup or 182 Cup, it's a daily go for the 182 Full Fat (both Cup packs)

Top advice that mate. Many thanks.
I’ll have a look on Cliosport as there is nothing vaguely local coming up on AT or eBay.

Also check out your local Facebook cars for sale group.

Don't rule out a local cheapy without actually seeing it and driving it.

I spend my evenings trawling Stalkbook for bargain motors, alas no hidden Clio’s as yet. 👍

I’ve just registered on Cliosport.net but can’t see a for sale section, do I need the full membership to the site I see this section?

I just bought a Trophy as I wanted to have the best of the bunch for resale and enjoy the Sachs dampers on the road. I think these cars have gone past their lowest value and are now generally more epensive than cheapish Mk3 RS's
It cost more than I could have spent on a 172 or 182 but I went for a high mileage one with a ton of history. It was probably the cheapest Trophy on the market.
It only had a full cambelt and service done in December! The previous owner had pampered it for years and it shows with how mechanically sound it is.

did the same (100k trophy) then took every excuse to go through all oily bits of the car -showering it with fresh parts. Everybody who drives it adores it regardless of what other toys they have

So after a few weeks of searching about this PH1 172 popped up on an auction.

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2...

Having spoken with the owner it’s due it’s belts this year and will need to be taken into account but otherwise seems very tidy.
I’ve a figure in mind I’ll go too and see how it pans out.

Paint would drive me crazy on a partially painted silver car, you can see the o/s rear quarter is a different shade to the door.

Having plastic front wings you always see a difference on lighter colours on these anyway so you’d have a real patchwork going on with plastic front & repainted quarters too.

I must have looked at these photos a hundred times this week and I can’t say I’d noticed to be fair.
Glad I posted.

By way of small update, I bid up to a level I was happy paying and was outbid, although it sold for my max bid.

Within minutes the seller messaged to say the 'winner' had bid by accident and couldn't retract his bid and the car was mine. Unfortunately I was at work and didn't reply until later in the evening by which time the seller had taken a deposit from someone, presumably the next bidder below me.

Oh well, clearly wasn't meant to be.

I'm now a little torn between stretching the budget having seen a decent Cup and nice looking FF come onto the market. Or wait out for something local and cheaper to pop up.

Someone on here bought it (see readers rides)

What sort of use do you want the car for?

If it was me I’d go for a later 172 full fat model, unless you’re going pure track and don’t want any of the extras.

I've just seen that. Glad it went to a good home, and we get to see another decent thread unravel.

If the wife ends up changing her car to a family size car it'll be a weekend toy for me / daily. Not that I commute by car. Hence it wont see much use.

It wont go near a track, or is very unlikely too in the next few years anyway.

There's an inferno red FF182 local to me on Autotrader which looks worthy of a viewing.

So I’ve been to look over an inferno orange 182.
Listed at £2550 but the list of bits it needs is pretty long.
And this is just what I can see.
Aux belt overdue, belts due next summer, leak from driveshaft area, brake warning lights, engine light on.
Dented bonnet, wheels need a refurb, plus a list of smaller niggly bits.
It’s been sitting a while and only did 300 miles last year.
Sorely tempted but I think the seller thinks it’s worth more than it is.

With that list of stuff i'd be looking to pay 1000-1500 tops , to be honest i'd rather take a punt on a sub grand car off facebook marketplace.

That’s pretty much where I’m at to be honest.
Such a shame it looked decent in the photos but not accurately described.

At some point you’re going to have to service the belts anyway so I kind of think it’s unfair to value cars that will need servicing soon so low. You may as well stand at a new car dealer and ask them to discount it for all the future servicing it’ll need, it’s part of owning a car.

I’d just be grateful they’re good on fuel and everything else you’ll replace is buttons.

I guess it depends how long you intend to keep it, if you want one to flip buy one with belts done but if you want one to keep honestly the best thing to make sure is the bodywork is rust free (check inside the rear door cards, they pull off and you can see in with a torch) the paint is original and the car is standard.

The whole dephaser and timing belt kit (for genuine) is £185 so even if you get one that needs doing in a year, just slowly buy up the bits and get a decent Indy to do the swap.

Honestly the scariest thing about these cars is the aux belt breaking. That will wrap around the inside of the crank pulley and take out the timing belt. The timing belt itself is not really the issue from what I’ve seen. I work in a busy garage 2 days a week and the only 172 belt broken I’ve seen was from aux belt failure.

When the dephaser pulley goes you hear it rattling, mine still sounds perfect but I’m going to do all mine soon. I have the genuine aux belt and tensioner here and will buy the timing kit soon for mine. The main worry for me is the aux belt going.

An honest appraisal. Thank you.
The issue on this one comes from the advert saying they’ve been done and then a thumb through the paperwork reveals they were done in 2016. So a cost is not factored in now needs thinking about.
The aux belt is a ticking time bomb as you rightly say, and with the recommended 3 year interval, well overdue.
Mods are limited to SS exhaust, springs and a panel air filter so no issues there.

And for me, the right car would be a keeper.

I don't think it's unfair to price a car overdue a cambelt/dephaser far less than one that had it done recently.

Yes both cars are going to need it done at some point but one of them is far longer away and tends to point to the owner looking after it better.

Also buying the parts yourself I'd be surprised if any of the rs specialist would just fit your parts and the danger of going to a random Indy is if they don't time it up correctly your down in power .
