I bought a nearly new Espace with a 2.2 diesel and auto box. Thought I'd go for the diesel for better fuel economy, and the brochure said between 31-38mpg, and yet around town I just scrape 24mpg and no more than 28 on a run. I don't boot it all the time either. This is hardly better than the 22 I used to get with my Volvo T5, which was at least fun to drive. What with the terrible (and almost dangerous) turbo lag in 1st gear as well, I'm not very chuffed.

Does this seem right to people, a modern 2.2 diesel only giving 24mpg? Should have bought a petrol.....

I got burnt in the summer when my best intentions were to no avail when buying a Mercedes 2.1 Diesel C Class. That car had an EU4 engine and Mercedes happily admited that since the car had gone to EU4 the fuel consumption had taken a hit. We were only getting 32ish (The car should have done 45ish). According to Mercedes the car would have needed a software fix (not available at the time).

The best thing is to get the car into the garage and get it checked out.

Sounds like a good idea - I'll give the dealer a call....

Ninjaseven, did you get round to taking your car to the dealer?

I recently bought a 2.2dci grand espace, manual box, 2004. I seem to be getting about 26 mpg round town and 30 on a run. I did phone the dealer but they weren't particularly keen on investigating since it was running fine otherwise, and not having had it for long when I spoke to them I decided to see how I got on.

It was suggested to me that urban consumption may improve in summer since which I guess is possible since it would warm up faster.

enquire at the dealer to see if it has got the latest update to the e,c,u which is downloadable direct from renault net or from a current update disc

Ours - 2.2dci manual Grand - gives 26-28 with my wife driving on the back lanes of the school run, and 32-35 with me driving it on A-roads to work.

Longer trips and 35 plus can be had, but you have to try.

It was a little better back in the summer, and there may be something to be gained by using better fuel, but overall it gives almost exactly the same results as our - chipped - SAAB 9-5 2.0t estate.

I've got the 2.2 dCi in my Vel Satis. I'm averaging just over 35mpg (ave over last 4k miles) with a mix of fast motorway and slow town driving. Unless your loaded up and/or "pressing on", it does seems a bit thirsty.
