WG, I pat my bonnet every day while thinking of you.

There were very few people owning these cars from new that could fully appreciate them. I understand exactly how you felt about Hatty and experienced so much more using all five senses plus another magical value that is a combination of so many other things.

I could write a book about this but you already know that a thousand pages would never equal what you felt seeing, touching, smelling and hearing everything about Her.

I'm glad too see you are holding your chin up WG. You are a top man and an inspiration to us all. I spent Sunday with Kerry tidying up the garage, throwing junk away and hoovering it out. Hatty has a bit more room to breath now.
Have not had a chance to sort out the tyres. Will do next month.

Annual boiler service today (not the missus) so ended up taking the day off. Went to see my local tyre man and finally had four Avon CR227's fitted. One more box ticked.

My mechanic mate Brian popped over this afternoon so we took Hatty down to his mate who has an mot station very local to me and put her up on the ramp. Primarily to investigate a possible fuel leak. It was noted back in May when she was in for her MOT that the foam surrounding one of the fuel pumps looked a little wet. He was not sure if it was the pipe from the tank or a fuel pump issue plus I had noticed a slight fuel smell when opening the boot.

Well it's not leaking. But something we think is a little strange and I hope you experts can shed some light on this. Hatty has two fuel pumps with the accumulator next to them. The pipe from the tank which looks straight rather than the 90 degree twisted 'S' shape feeds into one pump. That pump is fed into the second fuel pump.

Even the well read parts chap at Hadleigh Green says that they only have one fuel pump.

So my next mission is to change the batteries in the seat memory ecu's. I have the batteries. One of the auxiliary engine fans has packed up so need to replace that. Brian thought that one fan would run when the air con was on, the other when the engine gets to hot. It appears that the way that the fans are wired they both run only when the engine gets to hot. Can someone please verify this. We also need to check that the thermostat if that is the correct terminology is working correctly.

We are planning a 500 mile round trip to the Lake District at the end of this month and I want to make sure Hatty is in fine fettle.

Well we are due to go to the lake district tomorrow. I have a bit of a conundrum. With other more pressing stuff going on at the moment I have not had a chance to sort out the fan issue. One works the other is dead.
So do I take Hatty or Kerry's Alpina. Mmmmm
A neighbour, friend and fellow car nut. The chap that wants me to take him in Hatty to his wedding next month recommended a car detailer. I might have mentioned it before.
Nigel worked on Kerry's Alpina Tuesday and did a fantastic job. Long story short the main dealer that supplied the car back in February burnt the paint with a polishing mop. AAAHHH!!!. It is a metallic black 2004 E46 B3S Cab with 34,000 miles on the clock. Nigel has made it look brand new.
So today I arranged for Nigel to give Hatty the same treatment. I cannot recommend him more highly. What a job. We are pretty certain that the car has never been painted. If it has you really cannot identify where.
What is really weird is the car looks almost black. I know it is midnight blue but after the detailing the paint is now a lot darker. He thought it would be a fairly straight forward job but was suprised at how soft the paint was. I guessed this as I keep finding marks in the paint that I have never noticed before. Ok he could not get all the marks out but as the paint is 24 years old it looks pretty magnificent.
He was there from 9am to 7pm and charged £200. I gave him £230.

Hi WG,

Haven't posted on this thread yet but wanted to say keep strong and I think it's great Hatty found such a good home.

HI Graemel,

Just curious: did you ever figure out the source/cause of your fuel smell? I recently updated my Thread "New Turbo R owner" to say the fuel smell is still an issue with my car and it's going in for further investigation Monday.

I've also had a front fan pack up recently and need it attending to .. when the fan is on 'High' setting a pronounced buzzing can be heard. Same with 'Auto' or 'Econ'. Only on "low' does it not buzz.

The fans are normally quiet considering the huge volume of air they pass, it may be worth making sure nothing is fouling the rubber mounted motors or their external housings. SZ cars have no pollen filters so the fan drum can accumulate crud that can throw the fan out of balance.

Hello Jeckman and all my friends here. Thank you for your kind words. I'm hanging in there.

There's a reason for my next words.

I was coming back from my latest hospital visit last week. It would be around 21:30. Alongside the A55 in North Wales, I spotted one of the brand new Arriva 'Safire' state of the art buses. It was on a road off the A55 that was pitch dark and was lit up like no bus I've seen before. It really stood out.

It reminded me, daft as it may seem. Of the times I would pay Hatty a visit at the garage at night to see her cabin light up. I wouldn't get inside. I would just open the door so the lights came on and stand in awe of the beauty in front of me. Bentley (RR) really knew how to light the ladies up.

I would on many occasions, after taking in the lighting in the cabin, shut the door and wait for the lights to go out. Each time was a WOW! moment. Many times and, as I was just about to close the garage door, I would have the urge to open the car door once more to see her cabin light up (yes, I did open and shut the door several times on a visit, I admit it) then watch as the lights dimmed.

It was always as though the theatre lights were switched on and the orchestra began it's overture. The splendour and the majesty of each performance always secured an encore and, left the audience wanting more.

Sadly, life does not now permit a 'reprise'.

I know you all understand!

WG

I understand.

I remember every detail of first of this (SZ) series car I travelled in. It was late winter and I was in awe of the internal cabin illumination as the door opened. In an era where a single interior light was the norm there were 4 roof lights, 4 footwell lights and 2 in each door. 16 in total plus the additional map/ reading lamps.

From my office I am fortunate enough to look directly across the bonnet of my own car and never fail to marvel at it's unique lines. Very distracting!

WG, I know that just sitting in, and looking at Hattie for you, will have provided more enjoyment and appreciation for you than any who previously owned her.

Waffa, You too!!

Many a night i 'have' to go to the workshop and pass the door to the garage.Stop, open back door and just marvel at the light on the leather and carpetting and wood.My only regret is that the lights dont 'dim' off but got out at once, now if i could update it, i think i would be out there all night

Best Wishes

Ron
