Any significance to a "nnnn TU" number Plate?

Hi Bentley owners.

I have inherited a number plate which is 4 digits and the letters TU. This is a 1960s Crewe plate.

Does it have any significance to a Bentley owner? I only ask as I have seen press cars with 1900 TU plates.

I am not sure what I will do with it whether to keep or sell it?

Since the 1960's the Crewe factory have used TU numbers for factory demonstrators - cars used for brochures, motor shows, and press demonstrations. They tended to be numbers like 1800 TU, 2000 TU and 2500 TU. You can see these on many of the older photographs. When VW bought out the factory, it inherited these and it has become a bit of a thing. However there are a lot of TU numbers out there.

In the old historic number plate system,, TU was issued by Cheshire CC I believe

The Crewe factory was in Cheshire. Can you see the link yet?

Thanks, I saw the link. Family lore has now suggested it was the plate on my dad’s 1st car - a Mini. I will write to the DVLA to see if they can verify this.

If it was mine and I didn't need it, I'd just put it on retention. At least the new system doesn't require annual renewal now.

I think the TU numbers suit the older 'Royces' or Bentleys and any significance only tends to be spotted by those in the know. Having said that, I also have a ××× TU number, which I've had for decades but have never got around to transferring it across to the Royce.

I'm not sure that DVLA will actually tell you what you want to know.
