1998 Bentley Brooklands R limp home condtion

All,

I'm trying to diagnose a limp home condition on my 98 Brooklands R. Transmission will only go into reverse and 2nd gear. I suspect that the transmission itself is not getting a signal from the TCU but I need to understand the system better so that I can diagnose. Any pointers would be gratefully appreciated.
