Hello I have a 1985 Silver Spur. The air con is not cold. It has the original gas. I was told if I recharge using new gas the pump is noisey? Is this true? Can it be changed to a new pump that uses modern gas that is not noisey?

It's likely not to have any refrigerant in it now because it's leaked. Therefore it's not blowing cold.

It was originally specified to use R12, The car has large condenser so R134a will work fine. Especially in the UK where it rarely gets really hot. R134a works fine in my 84 Corniche and I live in Texas and it's a convertible so naturally leaky.

R12 uses different oil to R134a. If it gets noisy, it's because they changed the refrigerant without flushing and changing the oil. They should know to do this.

The A/C compressor used is a GM A6 compressor. You can buy them new or find a Sanden S6 compressor which looks like an A6 but has sanden internals and is made of aluminum, Make sure that you change the dryer and if you're going to replace the compressor, consider replacing the hoses too. But first thing first, find the leak. Your A/C is blowing warm so you definitely have a leak.
