How can I tell whether the coupe has an N14 or N18 engine? Is it on the V5 engine number or in the vin? Is it something I can see by looking at the engine?
the N18 engine is from 2012 onwards. the N14 cars seem to be about £1k cheaper overall than the N18's.

the N14 "Death Rattle" can be worked around with a new tensioner but ive read a lot of chatter where the problem comes back.
The one the good wife wants to see is 2012 though. I was rather hoping that there was a definitive way of knowing.

The members over on minitorque are very helpful. As far as I can tell, as there was never a "facelift" version launched, look for a 62 plate onwards.

N18 is 184bhp, N14 178bhp, it came in with the facelift, on the R56/57 the quick way of knowing is the front bumper, the facelift / LCi has brake ducts in the front grill.

Under the bonnet the N14 you can see the coil packs, on the N18 its a cover that hides them.

I'm fairly sure all roadsters are N18 powered ..... it was introduced on the Mini range in 2010, my clubman is a 2010 Novemeber car.

Steve, I'm still learning about these but I'm pretty sure that you aren't quite right.

The coupe jcw runs 208 bhp standard. They did use both engines and the n18 solved the issues of the previous version.

Sorry, JCW adopted the N18 around July 2012, the rest of the mini range gained it much earlier.

If I recall correctly there is a different emissions rating which will be on the V5. Also, the sport button on the N18 engines causes pops and bangs that are not present on the earlier engine.

The JCW Coupes had both engines fitted at different times but it is less clear when this happened. As a 2013 car ours has the N18 engine. I thought this was one of the earlier cars fitted with the N18 engine. But worth checking the car with Mini who should be able to confirm.

Sorry for the delayed reply! I managed to get a set for £675. You're usually looking more like a grand though...

Thanks for getting bk to me. Everything I've seen is over a grand but we'll see what I can find when the time comes to look.

The M3 is currently having bits done ready to advertise. Then I'll be hunting proper.
