Hi, I've bought a 2010 plate Cooper S and want to look into upgrading/chipping the engine management system to get some more BHP. I've had TVR's in the past and enjoyed the performance but I'm equally as impressed with the speediness and handling of the Mini.

Does anyone have any experience turning up the wick on the Cooper S? Who to speak to, what to look out for etc?

Thanks

There's a thread titled Lohen Performance Pack 2 on this forum that gives you an idea on what can be done.

There are various reputable specialists including Lohen, 1320 and Sussex Road & Race. The Manic remapping module (others are available) is a popular option & you're recommended to have the car set up using a rolling road at the same time. Minitorque forum is a place to browse for tuning tips though some of the advice given can be slightly slanted & unnecessary at times & a few readily run the reputation of certain tuners down & yet overlook others where the remaps have caused later problems as the cars previous maintenance is very relevant.

Lohen have one of the best websites I've found & explain what you'll need to do modification wise to apply the various remaps & get the results they claim - I've an equivalent Stage 2 set up on my 07 Cooper S with an uprated intercooler/spark plugs/exhaust & decat & it is running about 250 bhp which is about 40% more than the car when new. You can have an uprated "cat" that will maintain compliance on MOT though it's nearly x3 the cost of a decat.

More bhp inevitably means potentially higher maintenance (Eg Lohen recommend uprated oil for oil changes) & it's recommended you uprate the brakes of course as they'll work harder.

If you've not had the chance, see if you can have a ride in a stage 1 & 2 tuned cars - l personally could not see the benefit in going to a stage 3 map as it takes the cars up to a level that starts to put pressure on reliability (& the extra cost wasn't justified).

there were a couple of concerns on erratic running recently since remap, which were coincidentally done at Lohen, threads on MiniTorque, don't know if resolved. 1320 have a greater experience in tuning than Lohen, who for instance, sell tuning parts for the previous car but can't tune them, where 1320 can. 1320 will advise on the need for stronger internals which I understand have suffered on several cars, forging is advised often, or even block strengthening.

Lohen overall have a good reputation, SRR do, 1320, and in particular for engine strengthening it seems Millsy's Autos who deck the block if required now.

If I had one I'd go 1320 first, Millsy 2nd, SRR 3rd, they are the only ones not pushing products specifically, they're workshops primarily. Only my2p though.

The key thing I think is to work out how far do you want to go - 230, 250, 270bhp?

A lot of people change the downpipe, intercooler and airbox and then map to 230-250ish bhp, seems to be the common and easy option.

I'd probably uprate the suspension first as with the R56 the horrible stock suspension is the limiting factor for me.

I'm currently in talks to have my GP mapped by lohen. I have no plans to go beyond Stage 1.

Anything beyond 250 seems a little too much to me. Should be interesting!

That’s great. Thanks all.
I’ve got no intention to take it to some of the higher numbers but to give it a little more grunt.

What kind of costs are people seeing?

Lohen have just got back to me with a quote of just under £1,200.

That is for more than just a map though. And come under their stage 1 pack.

Just waiting for a few Lohen bits to be delivered, then off to local performance house for fitting to my R53 MCS which already has modified bits on it.

Intercooler, Engine Airdam, Pulley, Sparks, Brakes, Suspension & Map (bought it like that)

Then next week off to a Dyno to get a benchmark reading off it.

I think 230-250bhp would be perfect in the mini, I just need to decide who to use. I already have the sports cat so might put an airtek interccoler on it first then go stage 1.

Anyone used CLP for remaps ? I understand they are still Manic maps, is there any other maps to be considered ?
