2009 Mini Cooper S Clubman Miserably Failed Emissions Test

Nice forum here as always on PH!

Last week I picked up a 2009 Mini Cooper S Clubman and it has some odd symptoms:

- misfiring/hesitation a low 1000-2000 revs in all gears
- massive smell of petrol when standing outside the car
- miserably failed the emissions test with a massive 5.43% at idle and at revs
- high fuel consumption which is around double the norm

There are no warning lights, I've run a Bosch OBD 100 scanner on it and it doesn't come up with anything at all.
When the rain stops I'll whip out the plugs and air filter to see the state of them.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated?

You could always give it a good service, check for fuel & boost leaks out & air leaks in, when was it last given a walnut blast?

Thanks, I have no idea if there was a walnut blast done as i just picked it up last week. Fully serviced by mini all it's life with 56k miles only. Mini want 160 quid to do a diagnostic ... i was thinking of the O2 sensor but then i should have a fault code and warning light....

If you've just bought the car from a dealer, I'd be taking it straight back. If you've bought it privately, l suggest you find a good Mini specialist as they'll hopefully be a lot more friendly on your wallet than a main stealer for diagnostics. I'd be checking the spark plugs etc first and then working from there.
Good luck with getting it fixed btw.

Full service (plugs, leads included) and a walnut blast... Then see how it is.

If it's had main dealer servicing all its life, I'd be doing the above as official servicing isn't fantastic.

Timing chain / tensioner replacement? Had the hesitation at low revs on mine and that solved it.

I have a 2009 Clubman Cooper S with 54k miles, i bought it about 6 weeks ago and have the hesitation issue with no fault codes, i had mine walnut blasted at Lohen to see what that did and made no difference they couldn't give me and answer as to a definite so it will be work through with the most logical things until we find it.

I have a warranty so using that but I am about to put it in to the garage for a high pressure fuel pump to be done, timing chain will be next place to look if that doesn't sort it.

With the timing chain shouldn't it be sounding like a tractor?

Mine sounds nice and quiet and my mixture is definitely too rich with a strong smell of petrol all around the car. Sparks, filters etc being changed this weekend...

Thanks all for the pointers. Sparks, coil pack, air, fuel and oil filters, oil all changed and runs better. I'm having the walnut job done week after next and then the next will be fuel injectors and chain if the problems are still there .... fingers crossed!

Indeed however what's confusing me is that I have no error codes or warning lights at all...

They don't sometimes. Mine failed and didn't give me any fault codes, didn't realise until it struggled to start.

I had a 12 plate cooper with similar problems ,changing the vanos solenoid and plugs fixed. The solenoid plays a part in advance of camshaft. variable cams

Due to the hols it's slowed things up but I have the walnut cleaning guy dropping by on friday. I've changed plugs, coils, oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter so fongers crossed and I'll update the thread when done ....
