Mini GP3 lost its way?

Just had my email from the dealer saying I have to confirm if I want it by the end of this month - would be good to know how many people have confirmed but no way they'll give that info out!
Are you going for the base car or the Touring pack? My dealer tells me there are no other options...shoestring7 said:

The std car comes with manual a/c apparently, but no option to upgrade this to climate. Its my only 'must have' so I'm deciding if CC is worth £2k.....
My other consideration was resale and i think people will look for it. Then again the purists might want it standard! Are you all confirmed for yours?
I had an email from the guy who sold me my GP2 all those years ago asking if I wanted in on this. Plenty left last week anyways.
To be honest, the biggest thing that puts me off (disregarding it’s unreliability) was MINI rinsing the market value by bringing in another 50% on top of the U.K. market when they sold out the first batch and couldn’t sell them in other right hand drive markets.
Next thing you know it was big discounts literally within weeks of the first 200 owners picking theirs up. Screw ‘em.

I think you may be local to me (Carlisle). I've seen your CTR a coupleo of times. Did you buy the GP from Lloyd Mini? Interestingly (as a GP2 owner), I also got a call from them last week seeing if I wanted to put a deposit down on a GP3. Using howmanyleft, it looks like the absolutely peak was 250 cars in the UK, so they brought in another 25% over the original 200 - but the outcome was exactly as you said... from over-demand to over-supply and lots left sitting in showrooms eventually going for a discount. The GP3 has a much larger volume coming, but perhaps the market is warmer to this style of car now than is was then? Or... big discounts will be available a few months from launch...
I had it confirmed at the time as an extra 100. Perhaps they couldn’t shift all of them and they were switched around markets. Regardless, as an owner of a companies flagship and most expensive product it was a kick in the balls.
Residuals were remarkably poor for them, I think at around 2 years old trade bids were around 19k for a circa 32.5k car (new).

The GP3 is a different beast, my guess is that BMW/Mini got fingers burned with a stripped out track/road GP that was little faster (on paper) than regular Cooper S's with a JCW pack. This one looks much more like the other £30-£35k fwd 300bhp hatch backs, with 30% more power than the JCW, a unique dash & bodywork, lsd and the option of nav/heated seats/climate.
At at cost of only around 25% more than that decently specified auto JCW, that makes it reasonably value and a pretty decent daily driver.
So long as you don't compare it with other £37k performance cars - but you'd say the same about a £30k JCW.

At the weekend I saw some internal Mini dealer briefing documents. The 'base' (its referred to as 'weight optimised for performance') GP will not come with any form of a/c, so unless you like sweating the £2k 'Touring Pack' is a must in the UK for a car used regularly. Mini expect 90% of UK cars to be so specified.
They quote 1255kgs for the base GP vs 1340kg for a JCW - a saving of 85kgs. A lot of that must come from ditching the a/c.
At the point of writing, there were 100 of the UK's 575 allocation available. Those who have pre-ordered have to state a base/Touring preference this month, firm order next month (PCP pricing will be available), production starts in March and customer deliveries are complete by end June. Mini are trying to prevent stock or demo cars being ordered and will not allow any changes to confirmed orders.

I was at the dealer and the weekend and he was very keen to point out the lack of a/c in the standard car. They quote 1255kgs for the base GP vs 1340kg for a JCW - a saving of 85kgs. A lot of that must come from ditching the a/c.

He has tried to tell me that there are around 40 slots left with the others confirmed. What he wasn't clear on is if the c. 535 (in his opinion) that were confirmed had confirmed their order as you need to by the end of December or were just on the waiting list.
He said he'd had a client from NI ask for a slot and he couldn't get him one.
I do have this fear that they'll get about 50% pre-ordered and the rest will turn up on forecourts with free touring packs etc.
I would be absolutely amazed if BMW sell all 535 cars at full list price. That is a lot of cars. I also think it's quite expensive. Is it not the same engine (306hp) as the Clubman.. and will there be a regular (306hp) JCW hatch produced? And out of interest how well did the GP1 and GP2 sell?
