Still no chance to play, need to strip down the EGR and it will render the van stationary for a week as I am short on time at the minute, hopefully get to it this weekend. Did acquire a Launch diag tablet to assist with fixing though.

The lift kit arrived, was a bit worried as the supplier was not the best on comms, did ask about getting a few but had radio silence so took a gamble and just bought the 1 set, I think it cost £280 all in with delivery & duty, which is around 1/2 the cost of the UK supplier ones. May actually fit this kit first, will save my back bending over the engine and give me some more room under it while spannering.

And she is in the garage

20241114_193124 by Old_Chad, on Flickr

Looks like a mouse has been dining on the engine loom while it was stored at the barn, arse, more work to do but no wires through, just the outer sheath

20241114_193329 by Old_Chad, on Flickr

Will get it on stands tomorrow so it is easier on my back to work on and get the EGR stripped off

Right, EGR time.....

20241116_143204 by Old_Chad, on Flickr

It is a bit of a pain to get off, only 7 bolts, but sod all access.

Anyway....1 ERG valve & cooler

20241116_153102 by Old_Chad, on Flickr

Now this is where I get worried, the ERG & cooler are really clean, timing chain was done ~6k miles ago so looks like it was cleaned up then, so it doesn't look to be a gunked up EGR. Just going to have a play with the computer to see if I can get some actuation on it while it is apart but plugged back into the pump. I am really hoping it is faulty, otherwise back to head scratching.

Just a bit of soot on the exit of the cooler, disappeared with a squirt of brake cleaner

So some digging on the air code states it is the EGR valve stuck closed. The EGR was holding vacuum and moving fine so will see if the solenoid is playing up.

Crank fault is still there, not found how to scope a crank sensor out on the scanner yet. Took out the sensor again while the egr was off and it isn't covered in grease like the old one. Need to see the sensor output before I pull the trigger on dropping the gearbox to replace the tone ring behind the flywheel.

Glad you saving another clubby biggrin

After my R55 lunched its engine, even after having an apparent rebuild by the previous owner I couldn't bring myself to owning another and suffering more engine issues.

Watching this thread with great interest as I think I will do the same to ours.

Just had a new clutch fitted and having it remapped on Friday.
Will get the lift kit and tyres sorted when we get back from the Christmas holiday.

In the OP you said you we looking at a car play/android head unit - I am a but lost with all the options - what have you decided to go for?

Unsure on the headunit. I am not happy with the one in my Clubman, its slow and I hate the fake speedo in it. I am looking at just a decent BT adaptor and a good car mount for my phone in the short term https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/256009983206

The ones I was looking at did seem a bit too good to be true.
It's not the end of the world but would be a bonus.

Well not good news on the mini front, engine is toast!

Seems previous garage that did the cam chains really bodged the job, end result was enough end float to allow the crank to grind a chunk out of the block while destroying the crank, timing chain cover, reductor wheel and cam sensor.

Just waiting for a price on a replacement engine, financially touch and go on it at the minute, only thing saving it is that it was a cheap buy.

Right then, time to think over cutting my losses on this one or committing to some big spending.

So a used engine, will get new mains & con rod bearings, timing chain & clutch, plus new EGR valve all in is £5400 plus vat. Spend what the thing is worth or cut my losses now.....

Maybe time to move it on to someone who has a bit of space, time and the inclination to DIY which is going to be more financially viable.

Some digging on the tinterweb has found an engine recon place that does an exchange n47 for £1700, state they have new bearings, TC, piston rings, head bolts, gaskets & oil pump. Would have to fit it myself as current place is not keen fitting a motor they haven't recon'd which is fair enough, but it would be a straight install job as the front end is off right now. Will have a chat with them tomorrow, it is this or move it on as is.....will see.

Personally I’d rather an honest good used (ie one I’ve inspected myself) than a cheap “recon”. I did that on my old mg tf after it dropped a valve. Found a decent mg specialist to supply it, weekend of effort from me to fit it and job done. Ran well for many years after

Discounted the one I have found for £1400 after seeing their feedback. Moved onto a less backstreet engine place specialising in mini engine rebuilds, price is up to £2k but a much better reputation it seems.

Just waiting on the van having its subframe refitted so I can trailer it home from the garage. Will go and get the old engine asap though so I can start transferring parts over
