End result better be worth all this effort!

I'm just pissing around with a new steering wheel on my R56 today and need to get my F56 booked in for its EGR recall asap. Few extra bits ordered for the R56 off aliexpress... see if they turn up/fit/arent crap.

If I were to sell it with a new 12 month warrantied engine once done I will easily get more than my money back doing the work myself. The garage labour screws the deal really. Once I knew it was not just a timing chain swap at the garage we chatted & agreed for them to stop work, was not economically sensible for them to continue, but is with me throwing a new engine in slow time.

Mini back from the garage now, will do some photos of the damage to the flywheel and block from the excessive end float. Currently investigating is putting in an auto box is doable, ideally need a breaker diesel auto to swap parts off but can't find one. Lots of info on going from auto to manual out there, but not the other way around. Will keep looking until I get bored and pull the trigger on a new flywheel & clutch kit (£750)

Wish I still had a garage frown Limited to doing the pretty bits on the driveway. I applaud your mechanical acumen and bravery!

I think when we downsize in a couple of years a decent workshop/garage is going to be a must.

Right, it starts....

first job, upgrade the tube lighting to LEDs in the garage, plus an extra strip at the front of the garage above/in front of where the engine bay will be, 7 20w white light LEDs should do it.

So, old engine....

previous garage that (badly) did the chain packed the slot for the CPS with grease, unsure why, anyway my new CPS is getting binned and a new one fitted as it has been touching the reductor wheel.

Old engine, where to start....thinking exhaust & turbo first, then intake and injectors, new engine is a bare rebuilt engine, so everything inc sensors has to transfer, will have to check all parts as I go and replace as I find, don't want to do this again.

And as to conversion to auto, if I find a breaker donor in the next 2 weeks it is on, otherwise it stays as a manual. While the mini is still on the trailer I am going to fit the lift kit, its at a nice working height and will give more room to do engine plumbing later on.

Now is there any bits on an n47 worth upgrading while its out? Braided turbo lines etc?

That little slither would've been pushing my ID skills.
Electric or IC powered, generally? I have quite a big collection of IC engines and kits to build - am looking forward to getting back into it one day.

All leccy now, mid conversion of the Wot4XL at the mo, it did have a nice OS140 in it. Electric is a lot less mess.

Stripping bits off the old engine starts at the front, then inlet, then exhaust and turbo

Tensioner wheel has seen better days, building a shopping list for my local factors visit tomorrow

20250130_192522 by Old_Chad, on Flickr

20250130_193111 by Old_Chad, on Flickr

Do first list is water pump, tensioner, idler wheel, belt, inlet and exhaust gaskets, I think the oil cooler housing gaskets wont be a part my factor stocks so will grab that online

Injectors out, did this early in case they were stuck. Need to order a set of washers and will get them in the new head, just loosely fitted for now so I don't drop anything in the holes.

Expensive visit to the parts store, ~£500 down on gaskets, water pump, bottom pulley, belt stuff, oil cooler, 2x oil filter & oil, air & pollen filter and a few other bits. Latest quote on the clutch kit is £560, looking like it is staying manual.

Just need to get all the stuff back in the mini so I can use the pallet!

Managed to snap 1 end off an exhaust stud, just the hex bit to remove the stud from the head, it came out with the nut stuck on it so ordered a set of studs and nuts only want to do this once. Waiting game begins on all the parts now, most of the stuff arrives wednesday

LOL, if you include the clutch kit I am £1200 in into parts not including the engine right now! Scruffy alternator stays....although it may get a bit of a clean

Torqued up the front damper pulley too, so the front end is all complete, just the belt to fit on but will do that last thing. At a stop now until my exhaust studs turn up, a mate is calling tomorrow so will get the gearbox fitted up while he is here to assist, them back to waiting.
