Just had the first service done today (9370 miles) Mentioned some clunking noises felt through the steering wheel. Have been told that a new steering column is reqd. Also some noise from the steering pump has been detected (sounds like a sea lion when on full lock) and they're going to fit a new steering pump (all covered by warranty).

However was told that despite the inconvenience of having to return my car to have the above done it would cost me £15 for a courtesy car!!!

I am aware of problems with the steering column, but thought this was for pre-facelift cars. Mine is Sept 04 and post facelift. Hope that the same problem does not occur in 9000 miles time!!!!

Anyone had similar problems?

Have a look on www.mini2.com

the steering column fault is a well know one.

As for the £15 courtesy car, speak to the manager and they'll waive the fee.

Had the steering column replaced. They assure me that they have not had any cars back that have had a replacement. So fingers crossed. Must admit they have been very good....They spotted a noise from the steering pump (which I meant to mention but forgot to) and replaced that. They also admitted causing damage to the steering wheel when replacing the column (which I haven't yet noticed!) and a new wheel is on order. Must say the service experience is everything I have come to expect from my past 15 years of BMW ownership. (Courtesy car charge excepted).

My car is making the sea lion noise at full lock but I only have about a month left of the manufacturers warranty.

Should I take it into the dealer this weekend and get them to look at it? I have only had it about a week now so want to enjoy it a bit longer. I do not get a cloncking noise though, just the sea lion.

I would. On hearing this noise they promptly offered to change the power steering pump. Result - no more sea lions!!
