I had this on my 03 Cooper S and it signalled that the gearbox was about to go. Kept on going and eventually couldn't change gear, not very nice but coasted to a stop & got recovered by MINI - this was about 2.5 years ago now. All fixed by MINI at a cost of 6.5K.

Hope your MINI gets sorted. x

I know my Cooper S used to go into some kind of 'shutdown' mode when I was pressing on. Turning the ignition off, leaving for 10 mins and then turning back on usually did the trick. The problem was usually signified by a yellow light on the dash (transmittion light?) as well as the loss of power.

I have to say though, I only ever had the problem after the JCW kit was fitted.

No, I actually think it was an emissions problem.
