Hi All anyone got any advise about touring around Sicily, how mad are the drivers, are the police friendly etc. Any advise or experiences good or bad.
In Siracusa we will need on street parking anyone else had to do this. Any advise of the do’s and don’t of driving in Sicily would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance

I visit several times a year and usually hire a car as we have several places to visit each time we go. The only difference I really notice is that often someone wanting to pass will make an extra lane in traffic if there is space, not really a problem once you’re watching for it. Only other thing is to watch out for zones that are residents or pedestrians only as they do tend to get enforced. One time trying to find our hotel in central Palermo we ended up with a police escort so we could drive through the pedestrian area.

In Siracusa there’s a large under/overground car park close to the bridge where you cross to Ortiga. I’ve not stayed in Siracusa but street parking is very scarce in Ortiga. It is beautiful though - classic golden building per Montalbano title sequence.

I’d rent as small a car as you can get away with, those hill top towns can be awkward to get around which is why the real Fiat 500s are still pretty common.

The Targa Florio routes are well sign posted and there are museums in Cerda and Termini and the start-finish pits are still there.

Sicilian roads aren’t the most durable and repairs may take some time to happpen. Often the road will fall away but will generally be coned off. It’s not unknown on minor roads to get to a point where the road is impassable - just have to find another route when that happens.

If your into wine, Etnans - red and white - are good if you like minerality. Plenty of good smaller producers in the main wine areas.

Have fun!

In which case you won’t be far from Termini Imerese and the Museo del Motorismo Siciliano e Della Targa Florio. Owners a good friend of Vaccarella and has his car there among others. His name’s Nuccio, say James and Nikkie said to visit.
