You're spot on that is definitely a guilty pleasure as a flew past a lot of people up that hill!

You're a different breed doing Isoman though! That's certainly one that scares the hell out of me! Wish I was a better swimmer.

Any designs on 2018? And do I do a blog write up on your events or know of many who do? Always enjoy reading the follow ups especially in regards to wales. Although there's much more pleasure in reading the amateurs than the pros as there's less excuses and more fun if that makes sense lol.

How did you get on at Wales Sammy?

Absolutely flippin' brutal race.

The swim was fine, pretty much, a slight swell on the second lap but fairly reasonable conditions given the wind. (Wind direction has a lot to do with that, North beach in Tenby is still quite sheltered if it's a westerly.)

The bike was bonkers tough. 25-30mph winds, gusting up to 40, heavy rain, soaked roads, and some spiteful piece of waste oiled the roads. Hope they get caught (and he did it twice, the second time after they'd cleaned the roads so perhaps he may be tracked down?... Unlikely I know) as I believe there were a few injured. I suffered a bit on the bike, and planned to give up when I got back to transition. The cough/cold I picked up August Bank holiday was making it's presence felt, I was suffering coughing fits and with no running this year just didn't think I had it in the legs to do the run.

However, although 45 mins slower than last year my swim and bike times were good enough (given the conditions!) and I was able to take my time on the run after dragging myself out, finishing in about 14 and a half hours with a 5:50 marathon time.

Honestly this year was just about completion. Perhaps the toughest Ironman branded course, in perhaps the worst conditions experienced, I managed to complete my 3rd IM wales! Happy, and not too sore today. smile

Top work Dimi, congrats. it was very much about getting over that finish line this year.

Last year I was so on a high when I finished but this year I am feeling down with the result if I’m honest. I finished in 13 hours 24 and let the conditions beat me mentally. I didn’t eat enough and also dropped some food which I couldn’t get back and started to bonk on the bike on the start of the last loop. Managed to pick myself back up after smashing some on course bars and drink, I actually felt awesome on the first lap of the run hitting target pace but the wheels just fell off after that.

However I am chuffed to have finished as I could of easily let myself throw the towel in. Everyone who finished that race on Sunday did amazing, I think there was a 14% DNF rate. Does anyone know how this compares to previous years?

I’ve got IM Austria next year and will probably give wales one more go for a good time once I get over feeling miserable.

Competed at Lanzarote before and in every sense it is just the most amazing race. Haven't heard about any course change, but then again I haven't tortured myself by looking into before now!!
Over on TriTalk some is claiming to have spoken to someone La Santa and been assured that the course is not changing. They said the 70.3 course was changed because of a festival happening near by. That contradicts the official reason given by IM which was because of the law requiring road closures.

I am really keen on Lanza but if the bike course changes significantly I can see it losing a lot of its mythical status. Especially as the course would likely have to change to a loop format which would keep it away from Arrecife and the North which would remove Mirrador etc.

Well done on finishing mate and that's a good time just slightly quicker than me lol. 14% DNF is lower than average I think surprising given the conditions.

Got to be happy with todays efforts at the sundowner 70.3 given I was doubtful about doing it yesterday due to bad back. It seems the drugs (painkillers) do work.

Finished in 5hrs 36 mins 59 seconds.

swim 1.2 miles - 38 min 39 seconds
Transition 1 -5 mins 17 seconds (spent about 3 minutes looking for my bike like a complete buffoon)
Bike 56 miles - 3hrs 2 mins 26 seconds
Transition 2 - 2 mins 2 seconds (I had already found my bike)
Run 13.1 miles 1hrs 48 minutes 33 seconds.

Excellent well organised event and took over 40 minutes off my previous time for the 70.3 distance! Maybe pushed a little bit hard on the bike and the first few miles of the run as was wrecked and wanted to die by 9 miles.

Felt like death on the way home, puked up exorcist style out the car window and have now started pooing tar. after a shower i feel a lot better and have even enjoyed the first few mouthfuls of my ale.

Is it just my imagination or was that a catchweight contest.

I've got the Sussex Middle this weekend. Bit of a funny course, the bike leg is short by a good 10km, but there is 1.1Km of climbing! Looks like no massive hills but there are 8 cat 5s as its 4 laps. Looks like a log flume, climb, climb, climb, then weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Repeat x 3

Run apparently has a bd hill in it too, 4 times. Also assuming with all the rain recently that the lake is going to be freezing.

My training has been sub-par recently and I hate that. Usually turn up in the best possible shape. Worst thing with all the climbing is I have put on some weight recently so that is going to make it hard.

Good Luck! thumbup

Sounds similar to me recently, but it's looking up a bit as I managed to get through an IM with pretty much no running since January. I did the Edinburgh Half IM, but that resulted in a lot of pain in the heels. Fortunately massively improved with the rest, just meant the running wasn't in the legs for the Marathon bit.

Bit of weight loss for me next year I think; it turns out the extra timber is just extra weight to lug about, not, as I've been hoping, a good long distance nutrition self storage facility. biggrin

Weight loss is going to be key for me too if im going to beat 2016's time. as close to10KG gone by Xmas will be the target I think. 8 week get into shape plan before hitting the proper stuff in the new year.

That was a bd of a race. 1.3Km climbing I recorded on the bike. It was relentless. They said the swim was 14.6 c but it didn't feel that cold. Got out the water in 5th but was really dizzy, I walked to transition which was about 400m and 5 people ran past me,

Paid for the bike on the run. Muscles were done and just wouldn't fire. My HR on a Half Marathon is normally about 165-170 I couldn't get it above 153 as my legs just wouldn't move.

Focus on weight loss and building strength for the rest of the year, then training starts for IM Lanza!

It's Kailua-Kona time again for anyone that's interested - coverage starts at 4.30ish on Saturday afternoon and you can watch it live on Red Bull TV at www.redbull.tv/ironman or www.ironman.com

In other news, it looks like Tim Don's got his pre-race excuses in early https://www.instagram.com/p/BaIiQs6FuRf/?hl=en&amp...biglaugh

In all seriousness, it's good to hear he's (comparatively) OK and will mend naturally with a couple of months out - could have been a lot, lot worse.

Followed the stereotype of getting a tattoo today after doing iron distance. It took me 4 months to get round to it though!

Note the lack of any kind of calf muscle!

Well it is part of the ritual biglaugh and a finish (or even a start) is not something that is easily achieved, so why not celebrate it? Good man!

Well, my shoulder rehab is actually going well for once - I've not entered anything for next year as yet, but still got my "watch list" biggrin

If things continue as well as they're currently going, I may well just have to pull the trigger on a couple!

Anybody got races booked for next year?

Well, when I say "nothing booked", I have got my name down on the ballot for this beauty, but given my luck with ballots, I'm not getting too excited just yet!!!

Bloody love it if I did get a place though!

Got the lakesman 70.3 entered, the full was a great event so thought i would do the half next year. Also entered a sprint up in Bmburgh next august, only cost me £5 after volunteering this year.

I hear the ballot is quite hard for that. Bloody difficult race it looks like, I hope you get a spot. Jumping off a ferry puts the hibbe-jeebes up me for some reason.

I have entered IM Lanza. Currently in a shed as much weight as I can phase.

I have a few in for next year

Start in Dubai in Jan

Outlaw Half - possibly 70.3 Marbella a few weeks before......

Challenge Roth being the big one - I also entered Frankfurt, not thinking I would get into Roth, but I can and will defer that to 2019.

Now I just need to get fast - want to go sub 10 in Roth.......

I've tried before without success - there's 250 places up for grabs and around about 3300 normally apply, so better odds than the London marathon ballot at least (which I've tried 6 times without success as well!). It would be nice to get a place - nothing like a really tough race booked to make you knuckle down to some good work.

Talking of really tough races, Lanzarote is certainly one of those biglaugh good luck! It's one of my early season "possibles" for next year so I may see you there thumbup
