I did a VOTWO Long Swim event there (I think it was there) a few years ago - like a bath, and Sherborne Castle lake was thoroughly unpleasant by comparison.
That was my first OW swim, and whilst the bouyancy of my wetsuit was a happy surprise, I discovered that I could turn through 90 degrees in just three or four strokes if I stopped looking where I was going.
Eventually I got into a rhythm, and counting between sighting strokes is a good way to pass the time - of which there is a lot in a 3.8km swim...
Which year did you do the ironman there ?That was my first OW swim, and whilst the bouyancy of my wetsuit was a happy surprise, I discovered that I could turn through 90 degrees in just three or four strokes if I stopped looking where I was going.

I did it in 08, was my first ironman and a really nice place to do it too (much better than Bolton IMHO)
It's a shame it moved as I'd have loved to go back there and do that race again

Tough draw on the weather for Ironman UK, sunny and windy on the bike course. Although, it probably drew the crowds out, which will be good.

It's been warm up there today too
I've just got home to Swindon after a day spectating, and I'm currently sporting a rather red forehead and nose
I went for a run around bits of the edge of Bolton yesterday morning (the in-laws live around there) and it was warm enough by then. Starting a marathon in the early afternoon would have been hot hot hot!I've just got home to Swindon after a day spectating, and I'm currently sporting a rather red forehead and nose

Good man, lets hope it's 10 C cooler than this year !
Absolutely!!! Have you done an IM before? This will be my first, so I'm currently just building base level fitness and about to start a specific tri training program. Hopefully get out on my first open water swim this Friday all being well. Got a few weeks until the sprint distance at the Virgin London triathlon weekend in September and then it will be train, train, train and train some more!

I dragged myself around Challenge Copenhagen last year in 14h 18m & would love to finish sub 14h this time (starting this time the wrong side of 40 & a stone heavier not ideal though ) There are 3 of us entered & for one it will be his 7th (& last) IM distance tri. I found the book 'Going Long' by Joe Friel a useful thing to dip in & out of, not exactly a page turner but some very good points in there, most importantly was the need to go into race day injury free, even to the point that it's better to undertrain leading up to race day than carry the odd niggle, as it will get found out.Have you done an IM before? Enjoy London & here is to getting a good winter base done

And a couple about 12 lagers & 17 hours later !! The finish line atmosphere was brilliant for the last 90mins & everyone finishing in that time must have felt like they had won.
Did my first open water swim last night in Loch Lomond… Not a bad place to christen a wetsuit! Had been pretty nervous prior to getting in but I really enjoyed it, albeit it is a different beast to pool swimming! Did about 1.6km, mainly zig-zagging across the loch - I need more work on sighting!!!
A friend of mine is over in Cebu (Philippines) doing the Ironman 70.3 this weekend. I'd expect it to be humid and hard work!

Anyone done the London Tri over in docklands? I'm doing the bike leg in the relay version. Bit surprised to see nobody broke the hour last year, is the course that hard?
I did a 1.01 the last time I did it (it totally wrecked my run). The course is just too busy to go faster. The waves are so big, and there are so many people out on the course at the same time. Don't underestimate how much the bridges take out of your legs. I know you've time trialled, but there are a couple of hills that you really need to maintain your speed on to keep your average up. There are a couple of narrower sections near the Excel where you simply can't get past people.
Good luck and enjoy. And don't shout at too many people.

Yeah, I've done it a few times - do you know whether you're doing the Westminster or Tower Bridge route? They're basically very similar, (the Westminster one's got better scenery down the embankment) - both reasonably flat with rolling inclines through underpasses and over bridges.
If you've not got to run afterwards, you can obviously have a "proper" go at it, but just watch the underpasses as some people will be travelling a great deal slower than what you'd ordinarily think through them and if it's sunny, it takes a second or so to adjust to the darker tunnel . . . that's enough to park it into the back of somebody!
I've seen quite a few corking pile-ups (very narrowly avoiding one myself) and they're always in those tunnels.
