Utter disaster. Prep was going brilliantly then just over a week ago I ended up in hospital with an skin infection. Spent 5 days in hospital and had to have an op. Drs told me not to do IM. Thankfully I was out in time to at least go on holiday. My hotel is full of triathletes though.

Real bummer. Especially as I didn't injure myself training which is an occupational hazard.

Will probably take a punt at Outlaw so as not to waste the training. Will do Lanza next year or year after.
Ahh Man! That's properly st! You don't fancy Wales or Bolton instead of Outlaw?

Illness is my biggest fear when training for long distance! I'm 5 weeks from Roth and I haven't been ill for a while (not even a sniffly nose!) , so now of course I'm paranoid I'll get ill a few days before I fly out!

Aww man, sorry to hear that - what a proper ballache! I know exactly how it feels - had a rotator cuff tear/AC joint injury 3 weeks before IMCH in 2016. Such a blow after all that training.

Oh well, at least you've got a holiday to recover with and I guess you managed to soak up some of the atmosphere - it'll be there for when you're ready and I highly recommend it . . . may even look at it myself for next year biggrin

As RichW mentioned, I'd definitely have a look at Wales as well - different sort of challenge, but another BIG event!

Wales it's just a bit too far away, time wise. I've just completed IM training and I would need a bigger break before starting again and mentally as much as a physical I can't put up with that.

Bolton looks OK but doesn't blow my skirt up and outlaw is 100 notes cheaper.

Holiday has been good. Actually been nice to not worry about the IM and had chance to relax.

I'll be back to Lanza soon.

Turned 50 last year and decided to sign up for the Blenheim Sprint. Did it yesterday in the heat and really enjoyed it.

Finished in 1hr 48mins which was under my target of 2 hours but disappointed with the run element. Took 36 mins instead of the 27 ish of training because of the heat.

Means I’m going to have to do another one now!!

I think Windsor is still open to Entries 17th June. This was always my favourite OD event. (Human Race . co.uk ) Jesus it's got expensive to enter! £109 and no T shirt, that's an extra 50!

London (ExCel Centre) was my second fav and is beginning of August. Same company as Blenheim organising it (IMG) If your race briefing was done by Welsh Gary, it's him at London too.

They've offered it to me twice recdently at 25% off, so if you CAN wait till they offer it again (and I suspect they will) You can save yourself some money.

After doing the full Lakesman last year did the half this weekend. Another excellent event.

Came in at 5hrs 47 which I was fairly happy with. i thought 40 mins for the swim, my watch said 40 mins 7 seconds when exiting the water (swim measured a little long)but a bit more by i reached the timing mat after a bit of a crampy jog towards transition, the bike was quite challenging, about 2600ft of ascent and what seemed like a 360 degree headwind, still I averaged 18.1 mph on my not very aero road bike and position, then on to the run and managed a 1hr 48 half marathon. I did my usual and went off a little hard resulting in a meltdown and a couple of short periods of walking in the last 2 miles, you could pick it out from my hear rate graph as it went through the roof!

Anyway the meltdown resulted in my wife who I hadn't clapped eyes on all race passing me with less than half a mile to go to win her age group. I could have probably made a big push to keep up with her but I was happy with how i was going to finish so decided to let her have the win (and me not have a heart attack). She beat me by 26 seconds.

Anyway apart from a slightly crowded T1 resulting in it taking quite a bit longer than it should have I really can't fault the event, so much so as i type with my legs still very sore I have already entered next years race!

I recommend it to anyone and think it will sell out quickly.

The sister in law absolutely smashed it on Sunday in Nice.

Over 15 minutes ahead of 2nd place and a new course record. Not bad for someone in her 40's clapbow

I did my first sprint distance a few weeks back at Tallington. I’d lost 4stone in 8 months and been training hard when time allowed.

Not done much training since but been back on it this last week. Signed up for a super sprint in a few weeks and also for lakesman half next June to give me something to work towards.

It’s not about pace for me. Just the achievement of finishing after spending most of my life at nearly 20stone.

Fair play, that's a smokin performance! Is she taking her Kona slot?

Top work! That's the thing to do though - get your entry in and then you'll have something to motivate you . . . it seems a long way off at the moment, but all those autumn & winter mornings/days/evenings when it's sooo easy to veg out, because it's wet/cold/dark, you'll have something to focus upon that gets you out there doing stuff.

Before you know it, it'll be 2019, you'll have lost another 2 or 3 stone and smashing 15k runs & 70k bikes biggrin

2nd triathlon done last week. Weds night job. Super sprint distance.

Tied it in with family holiday. Not a good plan. Had been heavily on the beer for the 2 nights before. Hangover for the whole thing. Very hot. Swim was lovely but struggled with the rest.

Disappointed with my times and performance but given my build up not too bad to finish.

Noticed the standard seemed very high. Although given it was a week night it probably attracts more serious competitors than the weekend stuff for first timers etc.

Not sure what’s next

Was it a GoTri event? Really good events! The first tri I did was one of those, great for beginners and thats exactly who its aimed at. They usually have very limited spaces and its a bit frustrating that a lot of them get taken up by obviously experienced people.

You will be doing iron distance next!

I got the bug and went from a 200m swim GoTri event where I could barely swim to iron distance in about 18 months.

Outlaw successfully completed on Sunday, 13h 29mins. Last minute entry after Ironman reduced the Bolton race by 17 miles so didnt do it. Anyone who did the Outlaw this year will know how tough it was with the weather. Congratulations to all finishers

Thanks for the mention of GoTri – hadn't heard of the initiative previously, went to take a peek, and now signed up for my first duathlon a couple of days after the Great North Run biggrin

Just had a thought about what to run in… my bib shorts? Bought a basic tri-suit wink

Sorry, only just seen this.

Not sure is the answer, after many injuries and her age she is at the point in her career where she just takes it one race at a time. She also needs more points to qualify for Kona at the moment. Placing 4th in Sweden will give her the points required though.

Have just put my entry in for Zurich IM next July, will be my first IM. Will be 48 years old...

Have run three marathons, the last one a year ago, still in reasonable shape. Run 10k every weekend, and cycle around 50miles.

Was 93kg (5’10”). Am now 87kg. Think I will need to be close to 80kg on race day. Have also put in for Zurich Marathon as a warm up on 28th April.

Good to have targets !

Did the Weardale sprint tri last weekend.

Its a 400m pool swim, approx 14 mile bike and 5k mainly off road run involving about 4 kissing gates to navigate and a couple of styles to hop over. I was reasonably pleased to complete in 1hr 17 mins. Just under 3 minutes faster than two years ago when i did it.

I came in 10th out of 113 competitors.

It could have been better, I felt really good on my bike and decided to go all out and hopefully hand on for the run. The ride was spoiled by a set of temporary traffic lights on the route though, I had to stop at them on the way out and on the way back for quite some time, to really a problem as the time stopped was deducted from the finish time. The sodding lights did manage to ruin my race, on the way back as the light turned green i tried to sprint away, knocked my bloody chain off! Got off and replaced chain, tried to sprint off again, knocked chain off again!! argh! The second time however as the chain came off i fell forward and smacked my backside off my seat so hard that i knocked it out of position with the nose pointing down. This meant I had to stand up for the last 4 miles of the ride.

Anyway the wife managed to get her first ever overall win! She always seems to manage an age group podium however she wont her age group by 7 minutes! and overall by about 2 minutes.

Ive got an entry for the sprint at Bamburgh, Northumberland next Sunday as a result of volunteering last year. As its a sea swim I am going to follow the weather closely this week to see if i bother going. As its best part of 100 miles away I don't want to travel if the seas rough and its going to turn into a duathlon.

Zurich was my first IM. I liked it, though it was bleeding hot and I got monumentally sunburnt. (just like I did at Roth this year!) Was a non wetsuit too. The bike descent from Egg down into Kusnacht is so fun! Run has changed since I did it.

Judging from your entry to the Zuri Marathon, I guess you live there? So are expecting the relatively high prices hehe

I've been sulking since Lanza and got really fat. Need to get back into it. Went head first back into training and put my back out. Bit of gentle swimming for a week or so now to ease back in.

I'm going back to Lanza in 2020. Next year is really busy at home as my wife finishes her Msc. Lanza 2020 is a month before my 40th so that can be my present. Although it would be nice to have the family I think I will go on my own. The place we go to for our training camp do a Lanza week. They provide the food, accommodation, bike storage, and travel to and from the swims and main event.

Next year I feel the need for speed. Going to focus on Oly distance (maybe a couple of sprints). I did a 2:21 last year when I was in pretty good shape, and the run was long on that by 600m. I am aiming for a 2:15 target, with a 2:10 as a stretch goal. I can get most of the way to 2:15 by shedding some fat and increasing my bike fitness - my FTP is pretty good, but my Watts/Kg sucks at the min.

2:10 is going to take a lot more as I am going to have to drop a a few minutes from my run on top of improving my bike a lot. Nothing to gain in the swim really as I am already at 21min 1500 (wetsuit). Going to take a lot of work to get that down by any huge amount.

Just booked sprint tri's 2 & 3 of the year, Southam and Brackley. The Southam one is a repeat of the first one I did this year which I monumentally cocked up, but I have a time to aim at. Unfortunately, it's the day after Wolf run which I have entered so I can see my legs complaining a bit! The Brackley one is a bit of a strange one I think, the bike is 28km, which is longer than for a normal sprint?

Next year I want to do some open water sprints, I'm thinking Pitsford Triathlon. If anyone has experience or suggestions of other open water sprint distance tri's around Northampton I would like to hear about it.

What is the opinion on triathlon clubs? I usually train alone as I like being in my own head without distractions, but I keep feeling like I should join one.
