I had a dick like that turn up at my place once. After 4 minutes I put him out the house. Man was an imbecile.
Dealt with someone else with some actual brains instead.

You don't have to put up with their bullst you know.?
I guess the worry we all have is losing your licence.

Which is exactly how I felt.

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever, legal or otherwise, why my certificate wouldn’t have been renewed.

But you just worry that if you vocally express your displeasure then it may jeopardise your chances.

It was exactly like when you have the extremely occasional yet unfortunate experience of meeting a traffic officer. Sometimes they are aggressive, shouty, rude and if you are really lucky, ignorant of certain aspects of the law.

But you feel that if you try to argue your case with them, they will find something... anything.. to stitch you up with.

As I said, this guy didn’t even introduce himself or tell me his name. I still have no idea who he was. It was just bizarre.

The old FEO was such a nice guy and really happy in his work.

My FEO always has their ID round their neck.

They have no power of entry you are inviting them in, any decent cop will know to at least introduce themselves for the first time at the front door when in plain clothes / civ etc. (GOWISELY!)

I would say you met one of the very few bad ones.

My advice, bite your tongue this time but be ready next time. In 5 years he might (probably will) be gone.

Next time you have a visit have your phone in your pocket and record the conversation. Its your house nothing to stop you.

I would also read up on firearms laws so you know your rights and what you should be doing down to the letter.

Thanks for that. Some good points.

Hopefully he won’t be there in 5 years time when my next renewal is due!

Someone was right to suggest FEOs are either very good or abysmal.

It is essential to bone up on the Law as some of the things they come out with are total crap.

One asked me what experience I had with firearms. I explained I had worked with firearms and big ordnance all my career. He responded by saying that perhaps by this stage I'd had enough. He, on the other hand, was a one time dog handler.

I had got them all out for his inspection. All the bolts were open as per normal. He said that was unnecessary as he assumed I knew what I was doing. I replied that you never assume a firearm is clear until you have proved it. The visit did not last long.

One of mine asked if I reloaded .22 rimfire.

(I know it's possible, but he certainly didn't)

Metering the powder consistently that small is rather tricky wink

A pal of Mine whilst going through the interview for a new certificate was asked what different loads he should use for differing quarry
When he should use steel verses lead and even what his opinion was on plastic verses fibre wad was!

Has anyone tried a Benelli 828u ?

Thinking about something light with low recoil ?

Just looked and my certificates are up for renewal around December this year. Any advice as to when to reapply (South Yorkshire police)?

I have.

I liked it..... a lot.

The only thing that put me off at the time was that the unique design meant that any issues and they have to be sent to Benelli for any work, not something that your local shotgun shop can do.
This was when they first came out though a few years ago, and as time goes by, and they get more understood, that might change.
2 and bit years on from trying them a couple of times (my local RFD had a test gun that I borrowed on several occasions at the time) I happily buy one as a 2nd gun to my Browning 725, and I have first refusal on any used 828U that my dealer takes in on a trade.

Question:

I've seen a shotgun I like the look of on Guntrader, but it's in a different part of the country to me, and I mean >5 hours drive.

How do I buy it? Will they ship it to another gun dealer near me? I have a shotgun certificate

apols if this is gun buying 101, but I've always just bought in my county before

Your local gun dealer will normally take it for you for a fee, you then go in and have it signed over to you.

Yep just ask the seller to transfer it to your RFD.

There are a few ways to do it, in that some RFDs insist they handle the transfer so they deal with all the paperwork and input onto your ticket etc (tends to be the most expensive way as they have to take it onto their books and then log it out again).

Others are a bit more relaxed and allow you to sort the paperwork yourself with the seller via post and then its just a case of your RFD checking the S/N on your ticket matches the firearm they have had delivered and they just hand it over. Normally a lot cheaper / free in my case as they are not really having to do any admin.
