Thinking of that, I became a big fan of the alternative calendar that EF ran last year. Maybe Ineos are trying to break out a bit of PR....

Nasty crash for Dygert, I thought she'd got that sewn up. But to finish first...

Hope Pidcock has his chance to shine at the behemoth that is Ineos. My prediction is a podium in the Worlds this weekend.

There’s definitely a changing of the guard, hardly recognise any names in the GB team!
I think this will be the first time I’ve seen Pidcock race in what is effectively a ProTour race. Will be interesting for sure.

Just read on BBC that Quintana got raided for drugs by French police during the tour.

Looks like they didn't find anything (which is good, I like the small wrinkled Colombian). Wonder what caused them to do the raid though? Must have had pretty strong intel / accusing tip off - they've arrested a doctor and a physio.

Love that. The Giro is definitely my favourite grand tour.

Childish, I know, but am I the only person who has to smile every time they see a Trek-Segafredo rider with ‘splunk’ written across their backsides?

World championships...

If Pog had done some solo effort and won I think he would be reaching early legend status. I’d love to have witnessed that, but it became apparent he was playing a role for Rog.

Happy Alaphilippe is WC. He’s a deserving rider and will wear the rainbow bands well. A well judged move, as I think Van Aert would have monstered them all if that small bunch had arrived together.

Van Aert totally mullered everyone in that final sprint group, the guy is so powerful. Alaphilippe times it perfectly to get away when he did. His descending on the way down to Imola at the end looked superb, the foreshortening of the cameras and the matched pace of the bike cameras hid the fact he was really flying down that hill.

Pog gave a good push but the Belgians didn't bite and they just reeled him in after leaving him out on the front for a while, Rog never really seemed to be in a position to capitalise on Pog's effort as it didn't seem to make the Belgians break a sweat.

I agree that alaphilippe earned the stripes and he will wear them well next year.

Good race

If you like the Giro you'd enjoy this read : Gironimo!: Riding the Very Terrible 1914 Tour of Italy by Tim Moore.
He assembles his 100 yr old bike from bits & rides the stages bit by bit - funny & interesting, with details of the original tour which are remarkable! Of the 81 who rolled out of Milan, only eight made it back....

Good race
The course was made for a rider like Alaphillipe but he still had to get into position and execute and he did it to perfection. The chasing pack was too scared of Van Aert to put the work in to close down the gap.

Pesky Colombians swiping the towels I expect.
