I can’t wait to get going.
Put our nets up last weekend ready for some County girls sessions this week.
My nets start next Thursday.

I only started playing 3 -4 years ago aged 48, but absolutely love playing.
Play 3rds / 4ths Saturday and now v/c of the Sunday development team where we play at least 7 u13 - u17’s in the team.
Also snuck in a few T20 mid week games for another local club.

Played a few games with my 15 year old lad and that’s a great thing to be able to do.

Love it. Love it. Love it!

A winning start. Fielded a young team today with 4 father and son combinations in the 11

We were looking down the barrel a bit with the opposition at 68 for 2 off 15 overs but turned it around superbly to skittle them out for 116 off just over 30 overs (a father and son bowling attack plus one other bowler whose dad was playing but doesn't bowl)

In response I put a father and son combo in to open who then proceeded to put on 89 for the 1st wicket and knocked them off in 15.5 overs with 2 down. The only slight downside being a duck and a shocking LBW decision - I'm 6'3" and take a very big stride so am always aggrieved when I get given LBW on the front pad

Maximum points and top of the league

In contrast our 1sts played 1 over and then got snowed off!

Sounds like a decent first match.

I was given out lbw a few seasons ago to a ball that bounced 3 times and rolled onto my foot...
Think it was Dickie Bird who said 90% of village lbw’s, aren’t lbw... laugh

Q for those playing club cricket. If your club has a match this Saturday pm, will you be pausing it for the full hour from 3pm as per this https://www.ecb.co.uk/news/2101298 or just observing the minutes silence? With covid regs applying, everyone will have to stay outside or go and sit in their cars for an hour.

It’s hard to believe Phil would have wanted to stop play!

My club don’t start league matches until 1 May, so thankfully won’t affect us.
Certainly not going to be easy for those playing though, as can’t use the clubhouse.

Our league are suggesting a 2 minute silence at 3pm as a reasonable compromise

Thanks. Which league is that? Is the suggestion on a website or somewhere visible? Club President to persuade....

Twenty-something runs without once locating the middle of my bat today. Playing with number one son for the Sunday XI tomorrow. It’s good to be back in the middle.

How did other cricketing PH’ers get on?

Some english counties offer to host postponed IPL games. Would be excellent if it could be arranged.

Just noticed that BBC are showing evening highlights of the NZ Test due to start on Wednesday. Live coverage on Sky as usual, but I can't remember the last time any cricket was shown on the Beeb.

Six years ago today, I witnessed the most brutal display of batting I've ever witnessed live.

Somerset v Kent in the T20 Blast at Taunton. Kent, batting first, hit 227-7 with an excellent century from Sam Northeast, 114 off 58 with 16 fours and two sixes.

The hosts then started wobbily losing Trescothick and Trego in the first 3.3 overs, 22-2. But all the while that Somerset had Christopher Henry Gayle at one end, they had a chance. He started bludgeoning the Kent bowlers all around the park and in fact, mostly outside the park too. His fifty came off 29 balls, his century came off 45 balls and his 150 off the final ball of the innings, his 62nd ball. He had hit 151* off 62 balls with ten fours and fifteen sixes, at least three of which sailed over the Ian Botham Stand.

The final six off the last ball was retrieved by a keen fan who dived into the river and fished it out. He then went back into the ground where Gayle signed the ball and invited the lad for a meal later that night. Another guy was narrowly missed by a Gayle six which then broke his nose as he looked to see where it had landed.

Unbelievable stuff and probably my all time sporting highlight. Yes, it's a small ground and yes, the wicket can be kind, but it was certainly special to be there that day. Somerset lost of course by three runs but it was a heck of an innings.

New Zealand bowler Ajaz Patel has become only the third player in test history to take all 10 wickets in an innings this morning.
New Zealand’s batsmen are now doing their best to ruin his good work!

I have programmed to record the best moments of today on Sky, and am eagerly looking forward to seeing this incredible feat. Truly astounding.

New season upon us - what sort of start have you / your teams made to it?

Personally, mine was the worst it could be.
My first match since a full Achilles rupture batting last July so slightly apprehensive.
Have spent many hours with a PT and in the gym losing weight (3kg) and getting the leg stronger.

As an oldie (53) I was put in the slips for our 3rd’s but didn’t have much to do - almost an overhead catch from a spiralling ball, just touched the edge of the fingers but wasn’t to be.
Chasing 135, I was put to bat at 4 - first ball, carnage behind me….. bd…

Wicket was awful too - even the home team were berating it!

Anyway, playing in a friendly this afternoon so hopefully can get on track with the bat…

Oh - we lost. All out for 57.

I love this thread.

Playing for our Sunday team today. 3 juniors in the side including my son who smacked a nonchalant 68no in his school game yesterday so is fully expecting to bat at 3 or 4. I’m about to point out to him that there’s a 50% chance he’ll be too tired after bowling all his overs up the hill into the wind…

We also have a couple of non-cricketers who we can’t play in Saturday (league) games, but who faithfully come to training every week etc. The last time they both played we conceded a three without the ball ever leaving the square. The only time I’ve seen that in forty-or-so years playing club cricket.

Good luck to all cricketing PH’ers for the 2022 season…

My son plays for the same club he joined as a junior, he was skipper for their side yesterday, and today he's playing for another club, the skipper being one of his old team mates from his junior days.

He's made some really good friends through cricket, and always loves getting back to indoor training in the winter. It's a great game for socialising, and as the clubs he plays for are in central and southern Hampshire he gets to go to some really nice places, mostly in and around the Meon Valley. He's played about four games so far this season, and won a couple.

Good luck to all PH cricketers for the season!
