What a shambles and an embarrassment to the Aussie cricket team; they've disgraced their cricketing nation with these antics. We may have all disliked the way the team of yesteryear tore us to shreds in the late 90s early 00s (Warne, McGrath, the Waugh brothers, Lee, Gillespie...) but at least they fought firm and fair.

They beat England up in Ashes and feel big headed

They go to SA and Warner starts a fire fight again as they feel imperious

Just as countless other people going to SA do, they get bit back.

So then decide to cheat.

Dumb

Smith was just on the radio explaining its a sticky tape that they have in the kit bag and they were using it to stick grit and soil fron the ground onto it. Sounds like homemade sandpaper.

Funny how they’re always sorry about it when caught but never think it a bad thing before.

Cheating buggers!

Steve Smith suspended for one game and fined 100% of his match fee.

Cameron Bancroft fined 75% of his match fee and given three demerit points.

Wow. What a weak punishment... one can only hope that Cricket Australia take a harder line on it but I shan't hold my breath. Pre-meditated cheating clearly works!

It’ll be swept under the carpet and forgotten about in a few weeks/months...

While I deplore what Aus have done, don't forget the English team were caught tampering with the ball in the 2005 ashes, by shining the ball with a mint in the mouth.
They allegedly researched it before the series, and did it for several matches before being caught.

This doesn't excuse Aus in any way, so criticise them by all means, but be careful of falling off your high horses.

Shane Warne was saying that using spit generated by sucking a mint or chewing gum is fair game in his eyes.

And to add to their moral woes, they seem to be completely gutless now too.

57-0 to 107 all out in no time.

Don't like the way some news outlets are reporting that Smith has stood down as captain, he's been suspended! Saying that he's stood down implies he's had a conscience and done the right thing by resigning. No such thing has happened.

I'd give him, Warner and Lehmann a three year ban; a year's ban for Bancroft and leave it at that. Bancroft is supposed to be coming to my county this summer, will be interesting to see if he still comes.

This is what I don’t understand.

It is the “worst thing to do” yet the punishment is essentially nothing. If you’re caught doing it then it should be ban for the rest of the test and the next one, and a fine.

CA could turn round and say “they’ve been punished as per the rules of the game so we aren’t going to take any further action.”. And I think they might given how good Smith is. Albeit he won’t be Captain anymore.

Also, do the ICC have observers in the rooms to keep tabs on things like this?

Positive spin after a proven wrongdoing is one thing.. but when you've been exposed on the world stage as cheats to be so hubristic as to say "If there's one positive thing we can take out of this..." is, especially in cricket, fecking disgusting and shows no contrition whatsoever. Welcome to the modern sporting world.

Disgraceful and embarrassing, and totally unnecessary when you have a bowling attack of that quality.

Has brought the game into disrepute and tarnished a good squad.

I don't think a one match suspension is anywhere near harsh enough.

If Lehmann involved he should be sacked and fined heavily.

Smith banned for a year or more - fined very, very heavily.

Warner the same if involved in the planning.

This sort of st has no place in the game.

Re: the weak punishment - "changing the condition of the ball" is only a level 2 offence in the ICC code of conduct for players which is probably why the match referee gave relatively weak (although a ban is quite unusual) punishments.

The match referee could have gone in all guns blazing with a level 4 "conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game" or "conduct that brings the game into disrepute" but probably recognised that the incident is going to be debated and looked at further so has played it safe (remember what has happened in the past to Umpires who punished teams for ball tampering).

The Aussies clearly haven't yet developed the skin coloured rough pad you can stick to your palm for roughing up the ball.

Bright yellow tape....yeah that won't be seen by the 1001 HD zoom cameras around the ground that see everything.

Clear double sided tape would do the trick.

An awful shame, but I have to say I haven't enjoyed TMS as much this year.

I enjoyed the old guard with the cultured commentary and insight.

Not happy!

“Decision made by Sri Lankan and West Indies Cricket Boards, not the ECB”

BBC outbid or those cricket boards just didn’t want them covering the series?

At least we won’t have to listen to the bloody shipping forecast anymore.....

ETA: adverts for discount mattresses and cheap cars finance etc. during coverage?? eek

I love my cricket but I doubt I will tune in .

I guess it will depend on who they get as the pundits.

Not happy neither.
