Indeed. No Nationals any time soon!

We've been training at a school pool since the start of August, but that closes for 'essential maintenance' next week (why it couldn't been done over the 5 months it was shut for, I don't know). The only pool in Oxford (and I think Oxfordshire) which was due to open last weekend never opened and is now shut indefinitely as it had sprung a leak, so the Council's operator are now taking a further 2 weeks to get another of the public pools open.

You're lucky to get to a school pool (even temporarily). A third of swimming pools remain closed – including all the ones near me. Swimming and leisure centres seem like a forgotten sector of the economy; aside from national health, many jobs depend on leisure centres.

Yet swimming saves the NHS £357m annually, according to this report: Swimming helping to save health system £357 million a year

Swim England said:
According to the analysis, the largest health savings are made up from dementia (£139,546,106) and strokes (£100,046,173).

Other key savings are made in diabetes (£37,446,191), colon cancer (£10,433,330), breast cancer (£9,830,341) and depression (£9,501,792).

The report also reveals how £51,048,348 is saved as a result of reduced GP and psychotherapy visits by those who swim regularly.

I normally do about 3k a session so might try 5 or 6k. thought about 10k but would need to sort out feeding etc

Council run places, on the whole, seem to have been very very tardy with all this. Private enterprise sorted their houses out pretty sharpish, but months and months have gone by and they only seem to be doing something about it now. Our usual pool (council) still won't open because they're only just figuring out how they can move the gym kit around so that they can open the gym and sports halls. I mean, come on, you've had months to figure this out and its probably a days work for someone with a brain, tops.

We're using a school pool at a private school. They're happy to take the money and they've worked with the club to sort a "safe" method of different squads coming and going. Provided a lifeguard and everything. No bother.

'My' gym pool has been open a few weeks now, it was almost as busy as a pre-lockdown Wednesday night last night when I went for a quick swim. The difference was there were mainly the fast swimmers in the medium and fast lanes so when I got in (as a medium to fast swimmer) I was just getting in everyone's way.
The local 50m uni pool is about to open so that may tempt the faster swimmers back if that's their usual pool and I'll be back to being one of the quicker ones hehe

Did a 10k in the end, really enjoyed it. Didn’t have any food or drink during it, but seemed to work out ok.

Anyone open water swimming into the winter this year?

Due to the massive increase in OW swimming after the polls closed in lockdowns, many lakes and reservoirs are staying open into the winter.

Some lakes around my way are down to 10c now but mines still 14c, people are all in wetsuits many in gloves and boots and thermal caps. Apparently it’s going to drop down to 5c at the coldest pointed the winter.

There seems to be a debate about whether to acclimatise with cold showers etc or just keep putting on more thermal layers. hehe

Nope....too cold lol!

Our local lido is still open though and very popular (fully booked this weekend) they've just let the pumps drop off on heating along with outside air temps so they're not working hard apparently, takes a little bit of the chill off, but still only 16.3 degrees.

My kids are now without a pool for the forseable.

The school they were swimming at, the pump has packed up and is expensive and they don't know how long to replace

Bungay still isn't open after 1 year shut

Lowestoft closed last week opens (apparently) in Feb

UEA is closing end of this month and opening in Feb

What a lash up for competitive swimmers, feel sorry for them.

Anyone watch the ISL on BBC last night?

I’m really enjoying it. It’s weird swimming in gloves and boots. Sort of like you feel warm and dry in the water but with a freezing face, hehe

The gloves especially make me feel like I’ve lost a bit of connection with the water but I think they’re allowing me to scoop more water like mini paddles. I’m using c skin gloves and boots and both are awesome.

The coldest bit (at the moment) is the getting out and changed. My lake involves a longish walk/run back to the car (changing room closed due covid) and then ‘changing’ in the car park. I think I might get one of those dry robes as you keep warm and dry in them and can change inside it.

Yes still swimming everyday, sea temp down to 14c, so nice and pleasant still, will keep going everyday through the winter in my shorts.

Have been so far. Got back into swimming over the summer having pretty much stopped doing it regularly while parkrun was on.

Was at Buttermere a couple of weeks ago. Our local lake is now about 11° but haven’t yet used my gloves. You need to save something for when it gets colder. smile

Still an embarrassing lack of open pools at our local gyms, which are pretty much all 3rd party run council leisure centres, while all the private ones are up and running.

Great effort and a lovely place to swim. My family is from the Lakes so I know it well.

I was swimming here (St. Moritz, Switzerland) last week and it was 7 degrees. I was told today by one of the other keen cold-water swimmers that 3/4 of that lake was now frozen with water temp of 2 degrees. Unfortunately I can't swim for a fortnight due to a minor skin operation last Friday so I might miss the small lakes before they close over completely. I probably have a further month in the larger lakes.

I'm not using a wetsuit so tend to stay in for around 10 minutes or 500m. It's fine when you get used to it but you do need to train for it and have a 'routine'. I don't wear gloves as losing the ability to move my fingers is one of my early warning signs to get out.

Our pool is still open as normal and now that the professional athletes / triathletes have mostly left it's nice and quiet. There were 3 of us in a 25m pool last week and I haven't had to share a lane for some time. Because of the closure earlier in the year they're not closing as normal in November.

Anyone been watching the ISL?

If you're a fan of swimming or have those memories of meets in days gone by, it's really an incredible event for swimming in general.

And of course, Peaty broke the 100m sc Breaststroke record at the weekend!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/swimming/54951688

The races with Duncan Scott are well worth a watch too.

When London Roar race, it's on the BBC red button, otherwise it's on Eurosport.

thumbup And there's more swimming on television. Available to download on Sky, Against the Tides tells the story of Beth French‘s remarkable mission to complete the Oceans Seven within one calendar year: the English Channel, the Cook Strait, the Molokaʻi Channel, the North Channel, the Catalina Channel, the Tsugaru Strait and the Strait of Gibraltar.

Sky aired the film 7:15pm on 15th November, but you can download it on Sky Documentaries for another week or so.

Against the Tides - trailer on YouTube

On this theme, does anyone know where I can buy (or download) the Tonic of the Sea or Chasing the Sublime films?

Both are on YouTube. Just checked.

There’s loads of great swimming documentaries and films on there.

Not sure if anyone else is in the OSS outdoor swimming society, it’s a great collective of misfits and weirdos into open water swimming and has a very active Facebook group full of links and information and general outdoor swimming awesomeness.

The people who started the OSS also have made a few of these famous swimming mini films.

Some awesome swimming today. Dressel is a total animal.

Great to see swimming on the telly, especially when I can't train. Some troublesome rumblings though about people not getting paid though...

Stil swimming, haven't missed a day yet, sea temp down to about 9 or 10 degrees so only in for about 15 minutes a session.
