Joe Joyce is one of the nicest and most genuine boxers you could meet, BUT..
He did not look great at all last night. Hand speed was average, not necessarily a huge problem for a 6'6 heavyweight but his power is also average at best. What worried me more was the 4th round- Lewison was finished and Joe could and should have finished it there. He lacked both the desire and power to do it. That's going to be a serious problem for him when he steps up as if you let a more dangerous opponent of the hook he will punish you for it.
His strengths are his physical condition, his size (he's huge), and his movement which is good, or better than most heavyweights let's say, he is mobile and agile- I hope he has a good career but can't see him getting beyond a European belt.
Easily beats (and stops) Sexton, Cornish, Allen etc and other British level fighters though.
Lewison deserves massive respect despite his obvious shortcomings. What a tough man! Took huge punishment in there and did not quit. By the end he could barely see/walk and was a mess, still did not want to stop, huge heart. IMO could have been stopped to protect him as he's too brave.

Hard to judge Joyce.
Tough first fight against someone who is hard to stop (Whyte struggled) and clearly was in survival mode. Joyce also would not have wanted to take unnecessary risks in his first fight.
I think he will be European level not world level but good luck to him...seems like a decent chap and I like to support our fighters.

Agree it is difficult to judge him and where he fits in/what he achieves in the heavyweight mix. I'll be watching him with interest and hope he has a good career.
I don't think Dillian Whyte also going 8 rounds with Lewison means a lot as a comparison- Dillian is a terrible boxer, plenty of heart but extremely low on ability, athleticism, power, skill, etc etc. He went the distance with Dave Allen!! That says it all really.
The heavyweight division is in a terrible, crisis like state. I said on here prior to the AJ Wlad fight in April that AJ's biggest problem when he wins would be finding credible opponents, who can push him to the limit like Wlad did and give him a genuine challenge and us (the fans) the fights we want.
The joke that was the Fury vs Parker fight was an interesting watch, and proves this point better than anything else. If that's a champion and # 1 ranked challenger, so supposedly some of the best heavyweight boxing has to offer, you would hate to see the worst....

Well, both boys certainly earned their corn last night! Close contest but, in the second half of the fight, I thought Burnett played it just about perfectly; spending most of the round looking to match Zhakiyanov physically, but once or twice getting himself a yard of space and firing off a couple of scoring shots - it made it difficult for the judges to award the round to Zhakiyanov on aggression/workrate alone while the ‘sweet science’ stuff was clearly in Burnett’s favour, so seeing him edge the majority of rounds. Brave but shrewd tactics...fantastic demonstration of Burnett’s ability to fight like that (and as Booth has been saying for a while now, he’s looking close to being a complete fighter), but for career longevity, wars like that need to be the exception, not the norm!
Not to take anything away from Gassiev, but I though Wlodarczyk looked shot-shy...other than the odd tentative jab, he didn’t seem to want to let his hands go. Hopefully, Dorticos will give Gassiev more of an argument in the next round! Great body shot from Gassiev though...that’s two we’ve had in successive weekends!

yeah, i couldn't decide why he was hesitant....although they have sparred before so maybe he was wary of gassiev's power...i wouldn't want to move my arms from my body if i was expecting those sorts of body shots back!Edited by Yiliterate on Sunday 22 October 17:35
quite a nice stat that....the four semi finalists in the cruiserweight tournament have a combined record of 82-0 (67 kos)....fking amazing that these 4 are going to distill down into 1 winner

Plus each of them is holding a world title as well! Okay, Dorticos’ WBA belt is only the ‘regular’ title, but as the ‘Super’ belt is held by Denis Lebedev, who lost to Gassiev whilst in possession of that title, you can question the legitimacy of his ongoing status as the highest ranked title-holder of the WBA...https://twitter.com/wbsuperseries?lang=en

joshua is learning, and learning fast!....but to even suggest at this stage he is the greatest british heavyweight is fking mental !! lennox has forgotten more than aj knows yet and has to be top of the tree in modern terms......a nod has got to go to bob fitzsimmons too...and if we allow the bare knuckle era into our factoring what about broughton!?....he ruled as bare knuckle champion of britain for 23 years unbeaten.....tom sayers has to be up there as well and what about james figg??...he apparently had 300 fights and never lost one
Sky Sports is a joke at times. All they bang on about is AJ and others they are showing live or (especially) on box office. You even get st like this from their pundits, which has no intention other than to hype fights up:

Note that their reporting on fights not shown on Sky Sports is almost non-existent, so as a 'news' website it is very biased.

Not something you hear about everyday - Boxer refuses to fight and walks off.

Rahman (2-0, 2 KOs), 26, of Baltimore, was scheduled to fight Joseph Coats in a scheduled four-round bout this past Thursday night at the Durham Armory in Durham, North Carolina. The two boxers were in the ring and as the introductions were about to be made to the audience, Coats, who was supposed to make his professional debut, decided not to fight. He left the ring and returned to the dressing room.
Coats, trained by highly regarded trainer Don Turner, who used to train Hall of Fame former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, at first refused to leave his dressing room for the fight.
Forty minutes later Coats agreed to fight and made his way to the ring, only to refuse to fight again, this time leaving the ring. Coats faces a suspension by North Carolina regulators. Raging Babe Events promoter Michelle Rosado, who put on the card, and Hall of Fame matchmaker Russell Peltz were shocked, as was Greg Cohen, Rahman's promoter.
"Russell told me in his 48 years in the sport, he never saw anything like this," Cohen said. "A fighter in the ring rethinks his choice and leaves. I'm told he was out of the building before the announcer finished explaining to the crowd what happened."
