Most likely see you there! I lived outside Dursley until last year and either run or marshall most years.
I’m thinking of entering that race, heard it’s qute a tough one!

If you're doing the Avalanche Events Fan Dance I don't think you can postpone. I have entered the loaded Fan Dance in January as well but I just haven't been able to do any weighted running and haven't even broken my boots in. Based on this I am going to drop down to clean fatigue and run it with the lower weight and trail shoes. May be worth you doing the same rather than wasting the money?
That;s what the DS suggested at the weekend. Bit put off by clean fatigue though, that's just a lumpy trail run then. The walt in me wants to pretend I'm Bravo 2 Zero tabbing into battle :-)

I highly recommend this race. I just did it for some points with no expectations but had a cracking day out. Much less commercial than any other ultra I've done, the race is run and marshaled by a local running club who have clearly put some thought into both the route, aid stations and finishers prizes.
Just watch out for all the stiles in the last 5 miles or so - they're never ending. A proper little gem of a race and one I'll be going back to.

I did the Valencia Marathon at the weekend. My first real attempt at a standalone Marathon. I went with the intention of trying for 3.10.00 not really knowing what my ability was, however I had a bad taper with a bit of sickness and not being able to sleep for a few days before (although night before I was grand and this probably saved me) so decided to bring it down to 3.15 on the day. In the end I finished with 03.15.48 and a negative split to boot.

Found it really hard from Mile 1 onwards, I actually started to feel normal at around 15 miles and then bad again as per expected with 3 miles to go.

Highly recommend this race, a lot of more experienced runners than me from my club are saying this is the fastest marathon they have done and it does seem ideal for PB's as I can’t remember going up any type of gradient at all and the weather was amazing. My only issue is a marathon in December is quite hard work especially at the end of a big year and then having everyone falling sick around you for the last few weeks of training.

Will have a crack at sub 3 in the next couple of years but will just stick to triathlon for the time being

Calf cramp halts play and seems to have really knackered my calf to boot - so sore today. FML.

Cheers for the tip on the Butcombe. I'm very tempted, but also really into the idea of the Pembrey 24. Still - physio first...

Question if I may on alternating trainers

Do you guys:

1) buy 2 pairs of the same shoes (I'm currently using some Pegasus 35's)
2) Do you buy different models of the same brand?
or
3) Do you buy 2 models from different manufacturers

I like the Nikes, but previously I've used Saucony for years, latterly Triumph's (Iso4) which are a lot more cushioned and wider. And was thinking they might be better for my LSR's and keep the Pegs (and the incoming new pair) for Tempo/Speed work. As an aside, the Nikes are 10mm drop and Sauconys 8mm, so not sure if switching back n forth for stack heights is a good idea.

Would some Peg35s and some Turbos (having held them they seem more padded generally) for longer stuff be a good line-up?

Or perhaps Saucony Triumph & Kinvaras.

Over to you guys smile

btw Current training is for Brighton Marathon 19

I tend to buy Salomon, but that's primarily because I get them at nigh-on half price (and they do fit well enough so it's not price over fit), so I've got a pair of XA-Lite which I use for pavement/road and light trails, and a pair of Speedcross 4 which has a more aggressive tread for softer terrain.

I currently have 34s which im away to replace at xmas (done around 800km on them, zero tread left) for 35s and i use these for LSR, easy runs etc! I also have a pair of zoom Flys which i use for all tempo/speed/races up to half mara distance!

It's a perfect combo for me but might not work for others!

FYI im a 17min 5k/36min 10k & Sub 3hr Mara for context.

I brought two pairs of trainers at the start of this year. One pair (asics) are really comfortable, the other pair (nikes) I get a lot of foot pain when running. Consequently I only run in the ASICS and wear the Nikes more day to day.

I have just brought two pairs of Saucony in RealBuzz sale. The same shoe so hopefully i will be able to alternate them.

I bought 2 pairs of Saucony's - my wife has Vitality Health insurance through her workplace so we got a 1/2 price deal on new trainers so picked up a pair.
I'm currently using one pair ((Ride ISO's i think they are) for outdoors (mainly the parkrun) and one pair inside on the treadmill.
I've been a Five-Ten fanboy for years but as a new runner, it didn't take me too long to work out that they were not supportive enough for me to run in

Off-season much! Quiet in here.

Anyone have any Xmas racing coming up? I'm doing a 7km xc Rudolph's Rampage tomorrow. Dug out my Santa suit and judging by the pouring rain,I may need some sort of 4x4 system on each shoe. Will be cruising after recent calf issues, but holiday racing is all about having fun anyway.

No races for me booked in for awhile. Quite enjoying this grim weather though, makes slogging along trails more of an event.

I buy three sets in the sales, Adidas, Mizuno & Saucony sat for swapping over on new years day smile, no favourites ,,,they'll all get worn one after the other in rotation
I average about 1500 miles in a year therefore about 500 per set of trainers

Dirt run (10k ish) on the Sunday just gone, hard work that one. The course was around 5k so two laps for the 10k, incorporated some sort of swamp in the middle of it, as well as that a run up to a toposcope (and therefore a hill) and then loads of steps for another climb toward the end of the lap. My kids did the kid's run before mine so I had a additional run through the swamp with my daughter. Nice to start my run with already wet feet smile Luckily the Salomons drain / dry quickly. Added to that I'm fighting off some virus that's attempting to invade my body so had a dry throat / runny nose. Character building. biggrin

Next round isn't until mid January.

Always nice to see an improvement in results and time isn't it.

This is my first proper year of consistent running, and it's starting to show. Raced the annual cyclists V runners race in Irvine yesterday. 4.7 miles off road (think cross country type course and conditions) and was over 2 minutes quicker than last year in almost identical conditions under foot.

2018 has been my runniest year ever, which is great after a couple of annoying injuries in 2017 and 2016. But currently plagued by sore/tired hamstrings ALL THE TIME (also up onto my glutes). This seems to have come in since I started driving to work and spending 1hr-ish in the car each day. Any ideas what it could be or how to stop it?

Also had a flare up of my Morton's neuroma in the last week, that I hadn't had for a very long time, which is a bit frustrating.

Anyway, here's to an even runnier 2019 (and hopefully for me, back into the hills).

Foam Roller.

Not sure if you do this at the moment, but I do around 10 mins every other day on both legs, with both a roller and a ball. Focus around the glute and ITB band. All started when I had some sharp knee pain, after doing this for around 30 mins (total) no more pain, and no pain since.

Also worth looking at videos on YouTube. I did one recently for tight hips, and it was very informative and useful.

Morning,

After some persuasion from someone at work I put my name in the London Marathon 2019 ballot and ended up getting a place! That’s great except I hadn’t done any running for over a year and had been largely unhealthy for most of that time. Anyway, I got straight back out running and was surprised that even after all that time away the fitness came back pretty quickly and within a couple of weeks I was running 5 miles after work around 10 minutes per mile. Considering I’d also put on about 8kg over that period I was happy with that.

Then winter turned up!! I missed a couple of runs because it was raining/too cold out and then haven’t been running again since. I’m very much aware that the marathon is only about four months away and I’m starting to panic that I’m not going to be anywhere near ready!

Any words of advice or just a big kick up the arse from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations on getting in! I ran my first marathon this year (London), and it was an amazing experience. Things that I learned...

1. You have time to get up to speed, but you really need to start now. I downloaded a 17 week plan from the VLM site and pretty much stuck to it, apart from some injury and illness related gaps

2. Your local clubs are likely to have training sessions arranged for some of the longer runs - find out and sign up for them now. I did 12, 17 and 20 mile training runs with a couple of local clubs

3. Book in to see a local physio now and check for any underlying soft tissue problem. I had tight quads, which revealed themselves as an ITB injury late on in my training. Training gets progressively tougher and will expose any underlying issues, so better to find them and work on them now.

4. Ideally find a running buddy or two who will do the training with you. Winter is wet and cold but you need to be consistent in your running... training with someone else will definitely motivate you

5. Don't do your long runs at too fast a pace

6. Incorporate some speed and interval sessions

7. When you get to the longer distances, think about your nutrition plan. Shot Blox worked for me, although I never wanted to see another one when I'd finished.

8. Take it seriously and don't be one of those people who can't be arsed with the training and end up walking after 5k

9. Enjoy it!
