When asked if I was still getting back to running someone said "well, you'll never be as good as you were, but that's not important". What a defeatist attitude. I'm willing to give it a shot, and I'm currently only 32 so it's certainly possible, certainly for over 10k (34:52 pb). This year the goals would be sub 18 5km (I think this should be FAIRLY easy considering I've done very little and I'm definitely worth around 18:45 or so right now) and a sub 38:30 10km. We shall see what happens. Just need to stay injury free! 29 miles in the last 7 days and I haven't had a single niggle.
To give you encouragement, I ran my fastest 5k aged 43 (16:59) and also beat my 5mile and 10 mile beats aged 44. Back in training as of today although on a run streak to run every day this year. You can be much better with smarter training and listening to your body on injuries

diet is key also.
I can assure you I've got the nutrition side nailed I eat whole foods only, no ready meals or takeaways, fresh home cooked foods only, 10-15 portions of fruit and veg per day (yes, my food bill is extortionate ) and i don't drink alcohol either.
I sound kinda boring
Just done another 4.2 miles steady. Quads a bit sore from yesterday but nothing too bad.

I am the opposite of this, dislike fruit and veg (very annoying) eat lots of meat and bread and drink 4-6 beers at the weekend.I eat whole foods only, no ready meals or takeaways, fresh home cooked foods only, 10-15 portions of fruit and veg per day (yes, my food bill is extortionate ) and i don't drink alcohol either.

I have porridge with berries and banana every morning and that is the healthiest meal I eat. My wife eats very healthy so ends up cooking 2 meals most days. I need to sort it out but I cant get into fruit and veg, I end up just not eating as it tastes so foul to me! Its strange as the rest of my family eat very healthy and I was brought up eating good home cooked meals, who knows where it went wrong!
Any ideas? Its annoying as I would love to eat it but I just cant!

I think it's probably a case of sticking with it. I used to love chocolate etc but now I just don't want it. I feel so good in terms of energy etc that I know having st like that will make me feel not as good.I have porridge with berries and banana every morning and that is the healthiest meal I eat. Today, for example I had porridge with raspberries and blueberries, but I've since had a banana, apple, grapes and 2 satsuma. I've also got a couple of kiwis and I'll chop up a pineapple later. Then I'll be having loads of veg with lunch and dinner, too.
Just try persevering for 4 weeks, cut back on the crap and eat the good stuff and just neck it down. If, after 4 weeks you still don't like it..... Not sure

You and my mum eat the exact same diet by the sounds of it haha!Today, for example I had porridge with raspberries and blueberries, but I've since had a banana, apple, grapes and 2 satsuma. I have been trying for years, I actually am getting worse, its not just fruit and veg I seem to be going off a lot of things! Sauces are a no go now, not even gravy or a curry, I genuinely would rather just not eat. I used to eat broccoli, carrots, rocket the more I ate it the more I hated it. Its pathetic and I feel like a toddler but I cant cram it down. Might start juicing it up and just chugging it.

I have a very mixed diet, can be good one week and not the great the next. If i have treats i'm not bothered...try eat healthy but with a family of 5 it's never so simple, so i may have the odd mcdonalds or takeway too. I'm a Sub 35min 10k runner so doesn't seem to affect me too much if i have a bad or good week. I just make sure i get my solid sessions in each week and the rest takes care of itself.
When I was a sub 35min runner my diet wasn't as good as it is now (just getting back into running after a 7 year hiatus), but I am 100% convinced I'd have been quicker if I were eating the diet I am now, though bigandclever said:
20 miles today in my new la sportiva jackals. Really very comfy, but if you ever fancy some la sportiva anythings I suggest you heed the sizing warnings that everyone on the internet has. They run (ha!) at least a full UK size small. My usual 10.5+ is a straight la sportiva 12.
very true. i have la sportiva hiking boots and they are the same, 10 on the box when in reality around 8.5. very comfy though. TyrannosauRoss Lex said:

Look dont deny yourself totally, but take it easy. And think savory as better than sweet. So nail the peanuts etc and swap the second beer for a non alcoholic one or a NA gin. you be better for it the next day.
anyone else got anything lined up at the moment?
I've had DOMS in my quads for a week now, but it's been odd.....hard session last Saturday (22nd) and had DOMS on a hilly long run Sunday, Monday was sore, rested Tuesday, Wednesday didn't feel TOO bad but a tiny bit sore starting out but on my warm down it was difficult and later in the day I couldn't walk downstairs without being painful (both quads, equal, symmetrical). Thursday was an easy run and didn't feel TOO bad but sore after but not as bad as the day before. Friday didn't feel too bad but again, hard session and later that day I couldn't walk downstairs without discomfort. I wanted to run Saturday just gone but decided against it because I wanted 1 long run before an easy 5-6 days. Long run yesterday and the soreness came back BUT it wasn't as bad yesterday as it was after Friday and today I have rested. They aren't 100% but feel better than they did Saturday. I plan for just a very easy 3 miles tomorrow.
I'm hoping it's just my quads saying "look, you have REALLY upped the miles lately, give me a break" rather than I'm now going to feel sore after every session I have upped the miles probably a bit much, Due to work schedule I need to bunch sessions up as a rolling 7 days then it evens itself back out again, but as of Friday I'd done over 44 miles including 3 sessions (Saturday, Wednesday and Friday) so I'm hoping a bit of rest and easy running will see me right.
I hope to do a 5km TT on Saturday so plan for the very easy and short run tomorrow, no running Wednesday, easy 4-5M Thursday with 4-6 strides and drills. Rest again Friday. I'm hoping that much of an easy week will mean the quads settle down. They feel 90% there now but I'm just weary the soreness will come back. It feels 100% like DOMS although I don't think I've had DOMS where it gets worse immediately after a session....?! I don't think it's an injury because it is identical in both legs, and it does feel exactly like DOMS.

my normal Sunday run is a lap of Grafham Water, 14km.
I've been feeling good so did two laps on Sunday and found it surprisingly easy as long as I moderated my pace, and could easily have done a third lap if I'd taken some more fuel with me.
I'm pretty comfortable that the Hampshire Hoppit trail marathon that I'm signed up to on the 20th will be well within my ability. Last time I did it (2019) I finished in 6hrs.
Based on my pace on Sunday, I think 5-5:30 is doable

The age thing is interesting, I’m 44 this summer but feel fitter and faster than at any stage in my 20’s or 30’s, primarily because I didn’t really train then.
I limit myself to 3 sessions per week, I find any more and I haven’t recovered properly and am not sure if it’s beneficial to train while still recovering from the last session. I guess that’s one of the primary differences as I suspect my body would have recovered quicker/taken more punishment when I was younger.
Looking forward to a few races starting to see where I stand now after lockdown and club training being off for so long.

I'm 47, and I've been doing 4 x 5k Tuesday-Fri, and then a longer run on a Sunday morning. I find that that day either side of the long run is enough recovery, even if it means the Tuesday might be a very gentle run. Boston Marathon on 31/5...finally cracked sub 3 (2.55).
Ran with a group at just under 6.40's for about 15 miles then they dropped me. For once I didn't panic as it was starting to warm up, and just ticked the miles off. Caught the each of the breakaway by about 23 which was quite pleasing. Wanted to give it some beans for the last 5k but held off until the last mile for fear of blowing up so close to the finish...
Having a week off now and then plan what to do next.
