Just realised that I missed this!

Sounds like a great idea - although personally I doubt I'd be able to make this year - I'd be up for something maybe next.

Good suggestion.
I'd be up for it if Rosscow hosted at his club...the photo's from the other day looked incredible mate!

I'll join in the thread this year. Having played a couple of times per year for the last decade, I've decided to play more this year (target about 15 rounds, but weekly range trip). Have bought some new bats (Nike vapor fly pro irons, callaway XR 3 hybrid), and am arranging some lessons.

As you say, Hill Valley and Hawkstone Park are local - both nice, but not as nice as Carden Park, IMO. Likewise Portal - very nice, but not quite as 'special' feeling. Wychwood Park is also a good challenge, and usually in good condition. Like Carden it was very expensively built, and a bit plastic. The clubhouse feels like a university technology park crossed with a magistrates court, but it's a well-designed testing course.

One course local to you that I know very well and really enjoy is Greenway Hall. Recently transformed, and it surprised me with how well it was prepped when I went back for the first time in a long time this year.

It's a real golfers course - higgledy-piggledy, unconventional and lots of places where you're happy enough to be down in 3 from 40 yards out. Lots of members bounces and bits to be very wary of. Pretty short, but not many places that permit/reward a big drive.
You seem to be in my part of the world (South Cheshire) - we should play some time!

I would be up for a game if we can muster a fourball.

The Weirdos From The Internet Golf Society, I can hear my wife now.

Bet I am weirder than any of you.

It was! And the course is playing so well at the moment - we're very lucky indeed.

However, as a private club that only allows 2balls, getting more than one guest on the course at a time is impossible I'm afraid.

We could play 3 holes each.

Have you played Barlaston? I played it last year and found it to be a really interesting course.
Barlaston is the next course down the A34 from the one I'm a member at smile Played it a few times - it's a challenge to get round in winter as the holes at the bottom by the lake tend to flood, but it's a good track in summer. Few nice holes and blind tee shots, always enjoy playing it - even if they do keep stealing our members smile

I play at Stone which is about 5 minutes down the road - worth a play. It's only 9 holes, but with 18 tees, however it measure 6300 yards off the whites - and everyone looks at it and expects to murder it, but no one ever does. Lots of awkward bounces and inconveniently placed trees.

Good to see Carden Park getting mentioned regularly, it's been on my radar as a potential future club for me.

Chaps - I'm moving to Chester shortly and looking for a local course. Happy for a short drive to get somewhere if worthwhile. Is there a definitive list I should be looking through?

Apparently Pryors Hayes has had lots of investment recently and is in great shape - according to my father in law who was captain of Portal Premier last year.

Experience taught me long ago not to get into Weird-Off competitions with people from mid-Staffs.

That's like getting into a Thick-Off against the East Mids lads. They've just got a natural gift.

Ah you'll be fine then, as I'm originally from Dundee.

Not sure if that's an improvement mind smile

Never mind Weird-Offs and Thick-Offs. Never play golf against the Scots! Especially on a windy day. They all did 9 holes on their way to school every day.

Just the 9? Bloody luxury, my old man had me doing 18 round Carnoustie before breakfast! smile Actually it wasn't that bad, but I did have a golf club put in my hand about 6 months after I learned to walk. Judging by my friends at the time I was quite a late starter!

Seriously though if people in the area are up for a game, count me in, always happy to play with new people and play new courses. Although if we all end up on the Nicklaus, I guess I could cope with that smile

A few other decent ones in the area if you're ever desperate for a trip to Staffordshire and want to bring the clubs:

Brocton Hall (Probably my favourite round here, lovely setting on the edge of Cannock Chase, always in great condition, and a testing layout - no par 5's makes scoring...interesting)
Brocton Hall is my Father-in-laws course (he's President there for another week or 2)... I've played there loads of times (1st course I ever broke 100 on) and it's lovely... green are always immaculate.

Another course I played in that neck of the woods a few times (though it was some time ago) and loved was Sandiway.

Ok , so as I see it Kentlad would like to play rosscow course but he can't accommodate more than two people , I'm proposing a shotgun start on any given Friday in say June or July at the shire in Barnet , if we get enough numbers I'm sure the club will do a deal on green fees , anyone interested??? here's a photo of the shire to try and convince kentlad we have quality sunsets too !!😜

Had a good lesson last night in the quest to be rid of the horrid OTT.

Tried a few different feels / moves and the swing shape is looking much better now, so now I just need to hit a couple of hundred balls with it and see what that throws up to work on next!

I was only joking mate! That does look nice though..

Saw a photo The Shire posted on Twitter this morning. Looks like no one will be playing there for a few days!

So, first ever post from me!
Couldn't decide whether to submit my first ever post on the whisky thread, new shoes thread or this one, but as I'm a bit of a golfaholic, I chose this one.
Hoping desperately to improve my handicap from 20 down to around 15 this year and am in the middle of lessons.
Shot 46 points off the yellows the other day (happy days - 27 on the front nine) but then dropped to 31 for the next round (boo). I've lost count of the number of times I've been told I have a 'single figure handicap swing' and am getting a bit fed up with it. I've been playing for a few years now but my issues seem to revolve around my short game (which is dire) and my mental ability to be consistent, especially during competitions.
I would rather have a lower handicap than win anything, so will be submitting a supplementary card EVERY time I play outside a Sunday comp.
Wish me luck!!

I'd be up for a meet, but london is a bit of track from West Yorks.
