I've just counted back and I played my 50th game of the year on Bank Holiday Monday, this semi retirement business is pretty good!
It's our family fun golf tournament at Seaford Head next Monday and we're off to Lanzarote today for a week so will play at least once while I'm there and text my score to my cousin to be included, don't know how that will work though!
Did think of taking my clubs but my wife vetoed that so I will hire some instead, after many years of me lugging my windsurfing kit through the world's airports she's become pretty hard line about sports equipment.

Went back into American Golf yesterday and that Scotty Cameron Del Mar had re-appeared. Not sure what went on but it is sitting there with my name on it (managed to forget my Credit Card yesterday so couldn;t pick it up then). Couldn;t miss on the practice green with it so fingers crossed that translates onto the greens!

Played again yesterday. 97. Parred 3 holes, but we won't talk about the 9 on hole 2.

Putting was pretty good, chipping ok. Tee shots shocking. :-(

In contrast I shot my worst round of the year with 118!

I would have won the world slicing championship if there was one, combine that with uncut rough and it was lost ball galore.

This game really knows how to cheer you up rofl

Just wish I could get out more, once a week isn't really helping with game improvement.

Had a good August personally. A few friends visiting for a week of Golf helped me get some decent scores with the idea that the cards were going into the Pro Shop to get an official handicap. 100, 101 and 103 later and I was given a handicap of 21! Very pleased with that.

Two comps since then have been slightly different. Shot a 31 off the yellows for our Presidents Day comp, but the Invitation Day yesterday was a horrible day for me! Luckily my guest played very well and we still carded a 39!

Lessons coming shortly I think... How do people approach their practice sessions to make them more effective? My driving range play simply doesn't appear to translate across!

If you're on plastic range mats, I think there's a danger that what you practice won't translate to the turf.

You can really thump the clubhead into the mat an inch behind the ball and still produce a reasonable-looking shot, where on the course the same shot would result in a horrible chunk.

For me the key is to vary your practice - rather than just thumping 6 irons all session, vary your targets and shots a little from shot to shot. So pick one target for one shot, another for the next etc. Some will suggest not playing any two consecutive shots with the same club to keep your mind focusing on a new challenge each shot (like on the course) - I don't quite go to that level, but it is something to consider if you have some time to practice.

I had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend on the course - played in the Vardon Bowl at South Staffordshire GC on the Saturday - lovely course, but evil greens running 12.5 on the stimp - played really well, but completely cocked up the Par 3's, having a triple and two doubles - even managing to "Spieth" a chip into a bunker.

Then on Sunday went to play Beau Desert GC with a couple of old friends - another challenging course, slower but slopier greens. A course you reaally have to think your way round - driver stayed in the bag for most of it - and some of the rough was very reminiscient of St Andrews - thick and full of heather. Survived the day without breaking my wrist, so thats a result I guess.

The Del Mar went pretty well too - only 3 putted each course twice, averaged less than 2 putts a hole on both days, which I am happy with.

Off to St Andrews next weekend, hoping to get a round on the Jubilee when I'm there.

Exactly the thing I have found. Playing off a mat you have to be really careful to make sure you are not just thumping the mat.... This is one problem I am trying to fix via lessons and have fixed to some extent (doesnt always work)

Off for a lesson now... smile

Have a look at Fit39 gloves.

Easily the best I've ever used. Mine is 5 or so years old. I only play a few times a year now but it's still in perfect condition when needed.
Its good in the wet too.

I generally tend to use the gold real leather srixon gloves day to day, bulk-bought a load of Footjoy pure-touch gloves too which I save for big competitions as they're far softer and wear far quicker.

If they weren't £20 a pop I'd use the Titleist Player's Cabretta gloves, but they are probably the least durable ones out there, so are reserved for a once or twice in a season treat.

I tend to go through one a month, so usually just go with whatever Cabretta glove I can find on offer - this season it's mostly been Mizuno Elite for £12.99 from American Golf, but am currently using a Nike Tour model I got for £15, and it is excellent. I've had good results with the Srixon leather models too.

Thanks. I'll have a look at all of those

I am currently using a mizuno one. It's seen 2 lessons, ~4 rounds of golf and maybe 6 hours at the range and it's had it. Thumbs stretched and the Palm is wearing through. Maybe my expectations are too high.

Might be a crap glove. It might be that you're holding the club too tight and giving the glove a tough time. Most golfers do hold the club too tight.

Might be both!

Do people on here tend to take the glove off between shots? Or off when you putt?

The Dunlop leather gloves are very good for the money, and last well.

I played The Oxfordshire yesterday, I thought it was fantastic.

If you haven't played it, it's well worth booking some time.

Hugely impressive place, felt very grand even if a little aged not (clubhouse). The course, for an open layout, was superb, lots of standout holes, 17 being spectacular!

Greens were slow which was frustrating, otherwise I loved it.

Mine goes on at the 1st tee, and comes off at the 18th Green. Find I putt much better with a glove on, and its usually taking gloves off and putting them back on again that stretches them.

Of course, now we're at the end of the summer my two hands are different colours, but I look on that as a badge of honour smile
