That's golf for you, just when you think you're getting the hang of the silly game it bites you back.
Six weeks ago I had my best two rounds ever, 44 points and second place in a comp then a few days later 42 points in a friendly with mates and took the money, I also achieved my aim of getting a cut, from 28 to 25.5.
A week later I went on holiday to Lanzarote, had an alcohol related tripping incident and came back with a badly torn calf muscle which took ages to heal, even now I'm still limping a bit. I played my first golf ten days ago in a comp off the white tees and it was like I'd forgotten everything, driving and long irons were abysmal.
Just 20 points and 115 shots could have been seriously depressing so I went to see my pro last Friday, he took some video to show me the stupid positions I was getting into and gave me a good talking to, I'm playing tomorrow so we shall see if that has helped, if not where are you selling your clubs?

Just realised why I don't often get a good 'bite' on my irons, and very rarely get a divot. I'm frightened of ripping up turf.
Funny how my lawn-proud Dad has passed on that curse to me. No more Mr Nice Guy from now on though, those fairways are gonna get it next time out.
Yes! Absolutely this!Funny how my lawn-proud Dad has passed on that curse to me. No more Mr Nice Guy from now on though, those fairways are gonna get it next time out.
I've had this affliction for as long as I can remember. I have no qualms about bashing balls off a driving range mat , but put me on a lush green fairway and it feels akin to driving a snooker cue through the baize.
I almost feel a panic at the top of the backswing as I'm about to commit a gross act of vandalism, it screws up my commitment to the shot and most of the time ends up with a fat.
There must be some sort of mental exercise to get around this...
My close mates and I played our yearly round of foursomes at Goodwood on Friday, at the Park course this time, weather was nice and the course was in pretty good condition with surprisingly quick greens and Goodwood's just such a lovely place to be.
My cousin was on fire and I was playing okay so we won the game on the14th, driving and long irons were a bit random but putting and chipping was good and I had several pars. A wedge from 82 yds to 2 ft on the16th and a 6 iron from 134 yds to10 ft short but dead on line on the 18th were my most pleasing shots of the day.

Played the Brabazon last week.
What a lovely course.
Testing but not frustrating, nice wide spaces, plenty of water, every hole interesting.
My only ball that got lost / wet was the attempt to drive the green at the tenth.
I'm came in with a not too amazing 28 points.
Thoroughly enjoyed it though and would recommend it if you get a chance.

Played at an AWAY club match at the weekend at Royal Ascot GC, friendly bunch, ok course, started well and then badly slicing drives all over the shop, so played a hole , blobbed a hole. Back nine I sorted myself out a little and was 1 over gross until we lost the match on the 17th. Opponent playing off 6 had 5 birdies so fair play to him.
Following day was our Monthly Stableford, started par, par and then it went rapidly downhill....lowest stableford score in years (24 points), slicing wildly off the tee gain ! +0.1 on the handicap so back off 11 again.
Hopefully this "new slice" was a temporary thing !
Goal for the year was to get down to and stay off 10 handicap.
2 more medals this year to get a cut again........

I like the Brabazon, some don't. We played it shortly after the Ryder Cup was last held there and the rough was still punishing. We were hacking wedges sideways just to get out. I still remember shooting 3 over gross for the front 9. Then having over an hours wait to play the 10th. I was all for walking in but was convinced to stay out. I can't remember much of the back 9 but I played awful as I had completely lost all interest in being there. What a lovely course.

Played a thoroughly enjoyable round at Knole Park last Friday - super weather for October - and a decent round given it as my first game since May.
Should have broken 80, but poor chipping & putting put pay to that. Some really satisfying shots included a drive down 15 that measured in the region of 340yrds to give the long drive price (by a considerable distance).
I'm finally seeing the results of lots of lessons for my long game, just need to find time to practice chipping & putting and then playing to high single figures is a realistic option, even if I'm just playing 6-10 times a year.

Luckily this was a corporate day so not too busy during the time we were out & pretty relaxed.

I've been looking at the Belfry complex recently as its half way between me and a client - the PGA National course looks more enticing though, has anyone played that? If i had my way to be spending that sort of money i'd be off into north nottinghamshire, but geography plays its part!
I've played the PGA National. Absolutely loved it. The 'inland links' style was great, and it was in lovely condition. The welcome in the clubhouse and on the 1st tee was excellent. I really rated everything about the place.
I'd love to try the Brabazon.

Standing on the tee, without [prior research, yardage book or GPS, the decision on how far away things are is REALLY difficult to gauge. It's only once you get to the corner that anything makes any sense (and by then it's too late).
In the event, everything you can see, and most of what you can't, is within range off the tee.
So you can both get yourself in major bother by playing what you think is safe but being deceived by the distance and so being a bit long, and you can also do yourself a major favour if you make a good execution of a brave shot choice over the (huge and daunting) embankment on the right.
Superb golf hole.
