Plan over winter is to play as much as possible and keep working on my swing. Also want to look at the mental side - any books out there worth reading?
I read this Bob Rotella book a couple of years ago - was recommended by our club pro https://www.amazon.co.uk/Your-15th-Club-Inner-Secr...seems highly rated, cant say it did a massive amount for me but there was some interesting stuff in there.
My competitive season ended yesterday, managed to sneak back down to 5 after an adventurous 74. Its pretty pleasing to maintain this with an 8 month old son and 4 competitive rounds to keep the handicap active!
Looking forward to working on my fitness over the winter and a couple of lessons to keep the swing going. One range session a week and 2 rounds a month is my target. Roll on the 2018 thread - this seems to be one of the friendlier threads on here!
A recent visitor hit his drive the wrong way off the 2nd tee, in precisely the opposite direction to the green. He had mistaken the 17th green for the 2nd, and failed to spot that the pegs 15 yards in front of him were white not red. Assuming he realised his mistake (more likely someone helpfully pointed it out...) he'd have been playing his second shot with about 600 yards to go.
I know its not really fair to laugh, but I did.

Along similar lines I was playing a local course a couple of years ago, teed up on the 18th and did one of my wild slices onto the adjoining fairway. Spotted a green in the distance, pulled out my 6 iron a pured it to about 10 feet away.
It was only when I got to the green and was greeted by 2 rather irate members, I realised that green I spotted wasn't the 18th, but the 9th.....oops.

Golf is not a Game of Perfect was good, and also his putting-specific one: Putting out of Your Mind
There's almost nothing about technique in these books, it's all between your ears.
And after 2 weeks of being on fire my long game fell to ste, leaking balls both left and right (thankfully always found!). Despite only hitting 20% of GIR I was still only +13 for the round (+4 nett), mainly owing to my short game taking some slack - 28 putts...
The highlight however was putting a 5 iron to 2" on the 190 yard par 3 5th (Sundridge Park East course), gutted it didn't drop!

I'd recommend Bob Rotella's books. He certainly helped my putting.

It’s a very interesting read!
Came 3rd in both the stableford and gross Club Trophies at the weekend. Pretty pleased but didn’t get cut.

I enjoyed Putting out of your Mind.... no idea if it had any impact on my putting though.

djstevec used to do some absolutely brilliant swing analyses in this thread.
Great contributions. Where are you Steve?

Oh Im still hanging around here every now and then.....
Work and outside stuff means I barely have time for much else...MiFID 2 and MiFIR for anyone in financial world.
Did look at when I posted up those swing analyses for DuncanM, Merp and Rob....was mid 2012! Jeez time has flown.

When I feel like I'm doing that I humm a waltz in my head:

Thanks, I'll give it a tryDuh duh da da da smack
Always find my tempo and wait at the top improves a little
It's a frustrating game at the best of times but to go from one hole driving a 300+ yard green to then smashing the ball straight left in to the trees never to be seen again is seriously testing my patience at the moment
"Severiano" is the back swing, "Balle" the downswing, "ste" is the hit, and "ros" is the follow though.
I also found the wider I try to make the swing arc by keeping the left arm nice and straight, tended to slow my tempo down.

Made my first birdie today. Par 4 :-)
Went around in 96. Lost Ball on last hole, could have easily gone round in under 90 had I not made a few silly mistakes including poor club choice and a duffed tee shot on a par 3
Could have, should have, would have. If only Went around in 96. Lost Ball on last hole, could have easily gone round in under 90 had I not made a few silly mistakes including poor club choice and a duffed tee shot on a par 3
I shot a very pleasing 101 today considering the rough was horrendous and any ball even a few inches off the fairway was a nightmare to find.
I'm losing too many shots still with the short game, not landing near enough the pin and any that do are rolling past and often off the back of the green.
Golf is hard
Had a nice session in the video room tonight.
Working predominantly on back swing, felt good towards the end.
The pro set me up a Mizuno JPX Tour 6 iron in my spec (1/2” long, 2 degrees up) and I was hitting it very nicely. 176 carry, 188 total yardage. That was with a 93mph club head speed and smash factor of 1.32.

Are you trying to fly the ball most of the way with lofted clubs?
If so, a good chip and run technique will probably help.
It's tough to judge flight on the ball over a given distance when using lots loft to flight the ball up.
I find it much easier to pick a landing spot about a yard on the green. A PW will usually run out 2:1 to how far it flies. A 9i 3:1 or so. 8i 4:1. Adjust for green speed and slope and treat the shot past your landing point like a putt ie break.
It also takes out the risk of thinning one through the green, or possibly the duff that never makes it there.
My regular playing partner is terrible for whipping his 60 deg wedge out and taking 4 shots to hole out when he should take 3 max.
Good scoring is about double bogey avoidance in my eyes.
If you're talking about slightly longer pitch shots, I still try and take a bit less loft than a lot of people i see. The highest lifted club I use for 50-90 yard pitch shots is a 52.

Anyone know what this was that was pissing me off on the range just now?
Guy had his phone in his back pocket and every time he hit a ball (50% he thinned along the ground) his phone beeped and he looked at his phone....
....obviously was not working what ever it was. Any ideas? I couldnt see any hardware that he was using.

It's a bit of both, if there's no danger between the green and my ball I'll take a less lofted club (8 or 7) and go for the chip and run. As you say, they're a bit easier to control and even hit badly normally do ok. It's the one's from further out, maybe 50 or 60 yds I'm struggling with.If so, a good chip and run technique will probably help.

I also use a 52 for that distance as anything loftier is in danger of a duff or the club passing right under the ball.
I agree with the good scoring too, a round with 6's and 7's as the worst on Par 4's and 5's is pretty normal result and gets you around 100 but the few times my game is going well and there's a few pars and bogies the score comes tumbling down. The hardest bit is not 3 putting after landing a pitch shot too far away from the flag - it really destroys my scores.
