You need to have some idea of tides conditions and where they are. Then you need to put the hours in

Nice fish. I've done a lot of beach casting in the past mainly around the South Wales Coast but never specifically for Bass as Peeler Crab too expensive wink

Where did you fish for that one? Surf? Estuary?

Estuary - fishing upstream trout style with a big damsel nymph (looked a bit like the gobies milling around the bridge piers) at the top of the tide.

I was casting tight into bridge piers and initially thought I'd snagged before it zipped 60 yards downstream.

My first and only despite lots of work.

We have some really nice rivers around the Peak District and most are owned by clubs/ big houses etc. How can I find out who owns what?

Thanks.

Thanks for your help. The Peacock (Haddon estate) own most of the Wye around Bakewell which is around £50 for the day? Is that standard price for river fishing?

It varies hugely according to area and type of fishing, whether stocked, if keeper employed etc .Most I have paid is £200 plus on the Test - by contrast I can fish 8 miles of the small, unstocked trout stream near my home for £30 a year . Day tickets for chalk streams tend to be £75 -200 per day , but for spate rivers and streams in the north and west you can often get a day for £8-20 .

Look at Wye and Usk passport scheme (and other passport schemes elsewhere - cumbria etc ) which have loads of cheap fishing

Bit of a thread resurrection here, but we’ve been looking to get back into fly fishing for a few years now.

I had meant to try to go with my Dad and Son Tom, but sadly he was getting too old, and he passed away in 2012.

And once again in 2017 after my mum passed away and we cleared mum and dads house, I collected all his fishing gear with the Intention of using it.

And now here we are in 2020, Tom and I have only managed to get out twice, and once was to Packington estates,,which then went and closed down for good in 2018.

So I’ve set myslef a goal, to get out and do some proper fly fishing, hopefully on rivers and streams,,and ideally locally, but that’s always a challenge.

So I’ve found some relatively cheap waders and wading boots online today, so they are ordered.

I’ve renewed my EA fishing licence, and the free one for Tom too,.

Then I have even joined as a member of the BAA, Birmingham Anglers association, who my dad was a member of over 45 years ago.

So who else is up for a PH fly fishing meet up when we are allowed out properly then?

Nice sentiment but like many fly anglers I don't enjoy fishing with others - to me it's about the solitude - me , the river and some fish . But PM me if you need any advice on tackle /kit for river fly fishing , which I induleg in two or three times a week .

A fair point, I too enjoy the tranquility and peace of fishing.

I just wondered if anyone here would like a meet up, when this is all over of course. Ostensibly to fish and share tips and tricks, but also to enjoy a pie and a pint afterwards too.

I’m all good on my tackle and set up , but thanks for The kind offer.

It’s more trying to find some new locations to fish, and ideally closer to me in the midlands area, but when things are back to normal I foresee some longer trips to some nice remote river locations.

Well, if you ever get up to Yorkshire I have access to about 16 miles of the River Rye (a little known gem on the North York moors ) and the same again on small becks . Let me know - guests who combine my two obsessions are always welcome .

That sounds a fantastic place to fish, Lucky you!

And that’s a very kind offer, if I ever find my way up that neck of the woods I will ping you to see if you are about.

I know it’s not that close to the North York moors but my mother came from Saltaire, so I do have a spot of Yorkshire in my veins!

And thanks to my mums cooking, I can make some proper Yorkshire puddings too!

Hi Coppice,

I have fly fished Wansford and around Driffield and River Coquet, Toft Newton and Rothbury plus a few spots North of the border.

Anyway as I live probably an hour away would love to hit the beat where you are if not actually pay for a spot then when I can actually use it.

I know the area well as I like a few eateries around you and one that was best in The World!!

I don't like fishing with anyone else neither but a pint afterwards is semi acceptable. Maybe

Had a lovely day out yesterday fishing the Alne in Wotten Wawen just 15 minutes from my House.

Didn’t catch anything, but I didn’t care, had a simply wonderful time exploring the river and practicing my casting, it’s a tree lined very over hung tree lined river, so lots of roll casting needed, and I have to say I am not bad at it at all.

And the highlight of my afternoon was the brilliant bright blue KingFisher who zoomed passed me, all the way along the reach of the river section I was working, a joy to see.

^^^ Awesome clap

Tempted to to take a stroll to my local "Town Water" stretch on the Usk it's literally a 4 minute walk from my back door.
Catching nothing never bothers me either, in fact generally, the way I fish If I don't see a trout move I don't even cast a fly. I have several favourite spots that have usually have a can or two keeping cold though hehe I rarely fish it for more than two hours and If I'm lucky will leave as soon as I bag two.
My favourite fly is a Grey Wulf. My Dad would always say "give em something they don't understand" rofl

Great thread, and some lovely photos Nigel. I've not been fishing for years, and have never tried fly fishing. Would it be a good idea to get some 'training' before buying the kit? Or just hammer Youtube videos and hope for the best?

I am pretty much the same, I told my wife I was just going to drive down there to scope it out, but she wisely said well if your going I would take a rod just in case, and of course she was spot on.

I actually enjoyed just walking the bank, and looking for spots to see if anything was there.

When I spotted the kingfisher I had just sat down to replace the one and only fly I lost, which was my own fault as I didn’t do a good enough knot and it pulled itself out when I snagged on an overhead branch.

The whole experience of walking, watching and waiting is highly enjoyable, and I’m firmly smitten with the fly fishing bug!

I would not advise learning on a river unless you're with somebody else that can loan you a rod and line or use theirs (if you can afford training then fair enough though). Most people learn to fly fish on a pond or reservoir first. River fishing is a different animal that (usually) needs shorter rods and lighter lines and certainly a different approach and technique.

Get tuition before waggling anything in a fishy direction. Look up APGAI instructors. Have a couple of lessons.

I travel halfway around the world, spending a not insignificant amount of money, and am astonished at the number of people who do similarly, have bought all the gear, and can't perform the most fundamental skill involved.
