He likes Trent Bridge doesn't he. Averages 19 before this match and picked up 5 at 14 in 1st innings.Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Anderson

England look awful with the bat here, will be lucky to get to 150.
I also fail to see any point in playing Dawson at Trent Bridge.

SA seem to be getting some turn... so maybe our spinners will come into it.
Does Ballance have photos or something? Averages less than 20 in 24 innings now.
What else is there to know about him?
He's hit a thousand first class runs this year at an average of over 80, but he's just not capable of playing test cricket. Can't move his feet enough, so he'll always be found out by decent bowlers. Can get away with it in county cricket as the standard isn't high enough. That's obvious to me, and should be obvious to the selectors, but. ...Does Ballance have photos or something? Broad LBW.
Confused about the decision based on ball tracking. Given in by the umpire. Ball appears to hit leg stump however the centre of the ball is to the outside of the centre line of the stump, ie towards leg. At least I think it was.
I thought that meant umpires call?
Listening to TMS and they said they have changed the margins on which it's umpires call. I think it doesn't need to hit as much of the stump to classed as out. Doing some googling it appears the umpires call will change on 1st Oct. So if the ball is adjudged by tracker to be hitting the wickets at all then the call will be overturned. Big help for the bowlers. However that doesn't apply in this case.http://www.skysports.com/cricket/news/12123/103317...
I can only think I was mistaken. I'm watching on a stream so unable to rewind. Will check out the highlights on 5 later.
I just checked the BBC weather forecast for Nottingham over the next few days, and that's not going to save us either.
That was one of the worst displays of brain-dead batting from England that I've seen since the 2015 World Cup. There doesn't appear to be any way back for us now, so the series will be one-all with The Oval and Old Trafford to come.
Although I'm a Hampshire man born and bred, I'm not sure what Liam Dawson was picked for in this match, but the main issues surround the top order - Cook, Jennings and Ballance are so woefully out of form that we're relying on Root, Stokes and Bairstow to dig us out of the hole that we inevitably find ourselves in. I can understand Cook's selection, as he's useful to have around as a point of reference for Joe Root, and can often grind out an ugly century when we're up against it, but surely there must be a better opener than Jennings available? And Ballance must know where some bodies are buried - he's having yet another second chance, and he's not yet demonstrated why. Other than being a Yorkshireman, obviously.
We've got the West Indies still to come this summer, but then we're off down under for an Ashes series, assuming Cricket Australia start paying their players again. This series against South Africa should be used to find our best Test side, who can then (let's be honest) use the West Indies for a bit of a morale-booster before heading down to HMP Australia.
The selectors have some decisions to make, and quickly.

Spot on Dermot my old fruit. Ballance is a puzzler and no mistake. #2 is also a conundrum that needs time to sort out.
You're not wrong. The problem is that it's been a conundrum since Andrew Strauss retired. How many partners has Cook had to open with? One or two of them have managed the odd decent score, then seemed to become bewildered and crumble under the responsibility. Surely the ECB could persuade Alex Hales into the Test side? I can't think of anybody else who could do the job at the moment.None of the top 3 batsmen are performing really. And Ballance is no worse than Jennings.
In fact there's been bugger all consistency with the bat across the board really.
On recent-ish form Ballance should be scoring 2-3x what he is doing, and I'm not really convinced it's the quality of the SA bowling attack.
I do agree it's not good enough though. And we were having the same conversations about opening batsmen last year.
Maybe they just need to be told to go and play as if it was a one-dayer and leave people like Cook out - they'll score more runs
