2nd Test tomorrow. Another match where we will learn nothing about England's batting lineup other than it'll get mullered against Australia, which we know already.

If Stoneman, Westley and Malan do not score 100's in this match then there is no hope for them.

It looks as though Westley's invitation to tour our former penal colony this winter may not be forthcoming, as he's already been and gone. Stoneman at least looks as though he's intending to stick around for a while. And as I type that he's nicked one to the 12 year-old keeper.

The West Indies have responded to the rather shonky performance by their batsmen last time out by bolstering their bowling attack. With England currently at 37-3 it may have been a good move. Malan's chance now.

The Stoneman and Westley joke must end soon?

Short of cloning Joe Root (three times) what are the alternatives? Hameed?

We're in real danger of going into an Ashes series with a very undercooked top order, and although there's no Johnson or Harris, the Australian quicks will be a threat on their own turf. We can't keep relying on Root and a couple of angry ginger blokes to keep bailing us out.

Unless we're doing our best to lull them into a false sense of security. Yes, that's it.

Ian Bell is still only 35. Just musing.

I'll get me coat.

On today's evidence maybe we should get Hales or Roy opening with Cook, and just ask them to tee off? At least we might be 100/2 rather than 30/2 (again).

I also mused that but was reminded he'd retired from internationals...I wonder if he could be persuaded back...

Hales has to be a shout.

Roy - no.

I'd take a punt on Hameed at Lords...what have we got to lose. And a young bloke might rise to having something to prove.

The batting didn't look great but the bowling's not sounding that sharp either (though yes, the WI's have upped their game a little).

Complacency? Rocket for Root then they put on a show at Lords?

The Ashes are going to be interesting if nothing else.

Think you have to give WI a bit of credit lads, they batted beautifully today. Something a few of our guys could learn from.

Root did that very England thing of drifting the game from fifty overs until the second new ball. We really need better plan than just to wait.

I haven't been watching or listening as on holiday. How come we made no score at all yet the WIndies are making us look like them in the last test?

How are broad and woakes doing? I felt it a little unfair to drop trj.

Anderson pick of the bowlers again with a Michelle. Woakes bowled ok, Broad expensive but got Braithwaite with arguably the best ball of the innings.

Overall we didn't bowl great, looked a bit one paced. Stokes bowled some fiery ones, above 85mph and spitting up. Broad can't seem to match those these days, which were once he strength.

However Stoneman and Westley batting together now, and we need them to make the scores, pressure is on them both.

Malan presently 32 runs from 106 balls. I don't know what the question needs to be for Malan to be the answer. Surely Hales at five must be a better bet than this chap ? Or Roy. We need a dash of Elan, Elegance and well frankly some runs from a five. st I'd have Bairstow at five.

Anyway, grinding progress, I guess if this pair can hang on past the first ten of the new ball then we may have a chance to get a 200 lead.

One of Stokes, YJB or Moeen need to make a decent knock if we are going to have something to ball at.

Whilst I am here, what is it with Root and the looking fantastic and then getting out ? His stats for 50's are world leading. His stats for centuries are county.

Anyway, if we bat all day, we have a chance on a pitch that is wearing fast. Ali to clean them up tomorrow, with Jimmy A providing the unplayable first thing.

Root has a better 100 to match ratio than Cook... Just saying.

Just got in from a weekend away. Sounds like we've got a real test match, however we've done the same in this match that we did in the second test against the Saffers.

Ah don't get me wrong, Root is a fabulous player, and super reliable, just frustration that he looks so calm and collected and then out of nothing gets out.

188 lead.... 200 is a chance, 250 is a win.

By the way, those post about Bell - dream on - look at his county average now.

With Stoneman and Malan now in the runs it's now all a bit academic. My theory was that his experience would mean a few 30s and 40s as opposed to the newbies looking like rabbits in a headlight for a scrappy 10/15.

I don't even think we are safe at 250. And wtf was bairstow doing? Proper brain fart moment.

Need The Beard to be Feared to get 70 runs and the tail to at least wag a little. Broad should be number 11.

He's also very good defensively as well. Broad is rubbish these days. His century against Bangladesh is a very distant memory. Tbh he offers very little as a bowler imo these days as well.

Well might as well stop playing now, England will win this at a canter. WI falling apart here, and we have all day tomorrow to bowl them out.

I think the Century against Bangladesh came a week before they were all investigated for match fixing....
