Squad being announced today, and apparently its already been leaked:

Joe Root, Alastair Cook, Mark Stoneman, Dawid Malan, Gary Ballance, James Vince, Moeen Ali, Mason Crane, Ben Foakes, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Jake Ball, Craig Overton.

Not sure if correctly but does seem to be a few names I don't recognise, and potentially our No. 2, 3, 5 could be suspect. Not sure why Ballance is in the squad after the shocker he had in the summer....AGAIN.

Also rumors Stokes has broken is hand in the incident in Bristol and could miss the first 2 tests if thats true.

He might also miss it if he is charged and bailed.....

I am cautiously optimistic for Malan at 5 - he has started to show a bit of dog when off form, give him a run to find some fluency

Ballance and Vince's preparations for the Ashes tour should consist of them both getting a bigger TV to watch it on from home. Ballance has been tried and failed more than once before, preposterous to have him in the team.

And as a Somerset fan, I admit to a little bias but how has Jack Leach not been selected? Consistently one of, if not the, best spinner in the country yet overlooked again. I know a lot of diehard Somerset fans put it down to him not playing for one of the bigger counties and I've always thought "no" on that but you can hardly blame them for feeling that way.

We are going to get royally hammered down there, even more so because if either Cook or Root fail in any innings, we'll be skittled cheaply for sure.

I think the saving grace at the moment is that Aus look very poor at the moment and dont have the same potent bowling line-up they had in previous years.

England squad for Ashes tour of Australia

Joe Root (Yorkshire) captain, Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Jake Ball (Nottinghamshire), Gary Ballance (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Alastair Cook (Essex), Mason Crane (Hampshire), Ben Foakes (Surrey), Dawid Malan (Middlesex), Craig Overton (Somerset), Ben Stokes (Durham), Mark Stoneman (Surrey), James Vince (Hampshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)

Not sure if it’s the same as the OP.

Agree with all of this. Ballance is great at county level but has been found wanting on the international stage.

Leach has been the most consistent spinner for 2-3 years, taken lots of wickets yet Crane who has 16 @ 41 in the championship gets the nod? Bizarre. (Unbiased Sussex fan here!)

I like Overton coming in for TRJ who has been desperately unlucky to pick up his injury though. Hopefully Stoneman makes a decent fist of it as well but he should have been in a long time ago.

Ballance was Root's flat mate, he was always going on this tour. To some extent I think he will perform better in Aus, the ball moves less and swing seam is harder to find. Ballance has aflaw against late movement, so I could see him being more successful in Aus.

That said, I still wouldn't have picked him.

Stokes will be fine for the tour, he has eight weeks to heal.

Have the ECB said they will drop him if found guilty ? I haven't seen anything to say they will.

Not seen anything as yet, but I suppose we really need to see the outcome from the police investigation and what they decide to do with charges. If potentially he is charged with ABH, Assault etc could the ECB allow him to go on tour?

We need Stokes if at all possible

depends if he pleads guilty or not- or if charged at all.

One day, I am determined to get to Australia to watch at least one ashes test..

Depends on the sentence if he is charged and convicted. It's Actual Bodily Harm he was arrested under suspicion of.....not trifling.

If he's guilty, he is then eligable to play for Australia.

Latest evidence sounds bad for Stokes.

Doubt he'll be going if it is what it appears to be.

The Sun's Twitter page has CCTV stills of the incident. Not looking good at all.

Video of it on the The Sun homepage. Doesn't look like he has a leg to stand on if it is him!

As its only a clip your not sure if he was provoked but he knocked one to the ground then went after the other bloke. Interesting to see what the ECB do about this.
