Title should say stiff not stuff.

I’ve already got a foam roller but the knobbly bits are so soft they don’t really do anything. I want something that really gets into the muscles of my lower back. Rather than just buying loads of different ones online and hoping for the best I thought I’d ask here.

I got one from sports direct for about £15 or so. It's knobbly and pretty firm, and it's certainly sufficiently painful (in a good way) to roll myself over it.

I picked one up cheap from TK Maxx and it's a little unforgiving so probably exactly what you're looking for. I can't see it on their website but it's not the one that looks like a giant orange sex-aid!

I asked my physio about getting a knobbly type foam roller to replace the smooth one I currently have. He said not to bother - tennis ball or golf ball was his recommendation.

Balancing on the sodding things are a knack though - my advice is to put it on a foam mat to stop it sliding around when you're trying to get it in the right spot.

Baseballs are very good for rolling, but lacrosse balls are excellent.
